slouchy skinny jeans

hope you all had a lovely new year's eve! i've been kind of ushering in the new year with a relaxed vibe that's translated a lot into what i'm pulling from my closet. i'm currently obsessed with the slouchy jean. my current elliotts have never been more comfortable, and one of my new year resolutions is to do a much-needed edit of my denim pile. (random pair of wideleg sevens that i never wear, you know who you are!) my goal is to wear the same 3-5 pairs of jeans over and over all the time.

also, over the past few years, i realized that i just don't like low-rise anything. is that a sign of getting old?? whatever, give me midrise, or even high-waisted jeans any day. i know there is a mainstream idea of denim 'fit' that dictates no baggy sagginess around the waist/hip/butt area, but mainstream style commonsense isn't all that it's cracked up to be. i'm not going to become an apologist for utterly unflattering weirdness in the name of fashion (though, admittedly, that is the game we play), but i think more credit needs to be given to slim-fitting jeans that have just the right amount of slouch. what do you think?

  1. Help me here. How can jeans be both slouchy and skinny at the same time?

  2. LPC - i think it's all about a little more relaxed fit in the waist/hip/butt while still keeping to a relatively slim profile through the leg. the ones i'm wearing here are looser on top but then taper down. i'm sure this style of denim is an acquired taste, but i think the idea is genius.

  3. I think they look great on you. The overall look is relaxed, yet really chic.

And, like you, I'm totally over the low-rise trend. Exposed butt cracks and muffin top? No thanks.

  4. thanks, jennifer! :) i'm convinced that the person responsible for bringing low rise denim to late 1990s fashion is utterly clueless about what women want in denim. i think a great pair of jeans needs to be able to take a big delicious restaurant meal...thank goodness for the alternative design perspective of the ladies behind Current/Elliott!

  5. Looks great! I never liked the super low rise . . on myself or on anyone else, things are better left to the imagination.

the denim looks great! I find myself rotating between Habitual bootcut denim, Jeanshop classic mid rise denim, and fifth avenue shoe repair skinny jeans. I think I'm going to give myself a ban on buying denim for the next few years.

  7. nanashi - i'm with you on the denim ban. though i just got a pair of C/Es on sale from piperlime in the post-xmas sales. :P

julie - thanks! :) what are you fave brands?

pret a porter - agreed with you on the britney spears issue! lol. and yes, i can see how low rise may be more flattering on some figures. i just have never found any low rise pairs that don't cut into my stomach when i'm sitting down or moving around. but i've had pretty good luck with buying denim online - with retailers that have generous return/exchange policies, of course. i'm always the same size in current/elliotts and J Brand, which makes getting good online deals quite convenient.

  8. Great jeans! I spent many moons staring at them online, but I really couldn't bring myself to order jeans online without trying them. Current Elliot seems to be the only people making slouchy skinnys. In the end, I opted to tailor a pair of jeans one size too big for me to get the look I wanted.

  9. lin - some of the large online retailers like Revolve carry a great selection of C/Es with customer reviews, which is really helpful. but it's funny that you mention opting to tailor a pair yourself, because i believe thats what the designers behind C/E used to do with vintage denim when they were stylists!

  10. Oh, the jeans are just flawless on you! May I ask how tall you are and what size you took in the jeans? Cropped jeans are never cropped on me, who is petite. "i realized that i just don't like low-rise anything" - I've never liked low-rise, I realized that when I was 13. haha! It's a good thing that my all-time favorite jeans brand, Cheap Monday, doesn't make low-rise jeans!!

  11. fleurette: i'm 5'4 and always a 25 in C/E jeans. i really like the C/E and some of the J Brand cropped styles. saves me a trip to my tailor for hemming :)

  12. Ah, I'm 5'4 too. Glad to see other stylish women at my height.. I hate looking at photos of supermodels off-duty. I know that what they're wearing will never work on me. I don't own any jeans from C/E or J Brand, but I think I might check them out in the future. Too bad the jeans are REALLY expensive in Norway. I should make my US readers send me some jeans, haha..

The jeans are perfectly cropped on you! In addition, I don't think I mentioned that this is one of the chicest outfit I've seen. Very Parisian!

  13. fleurette: aww, you are too sweet! totally with you on the glut of MOD images floating around... also don't believe in wearing 5 inch heels (4" is the max i will do) to compensate for not being model height. so, Sofia Coppola is a really inspiring style icon in that regard, AND she embraces her petite frame and her understated style :)

have you browsed the selection of C/E and J brands at Revolveclothing.com? they have really good selection and the best customer service of the major online boutiques...even with the duty tax it may be cheaper than getting these brands at retail in Norway? Revolve also has great sales, as does Piperlime.

  14. ok so this is 2 years later, but I agree w/you. Just bought a pair of slouchy skinnies from J Brand on sale at ShopBop...hoping they will fit. I love the fit you are showing in your pic. :-)
