hermès kelly, 3 ways

vintage hermes kelly bagjcrew tee, uniqlo belt, current/elliott cargo pants, DKNY heels, mondaine watch, simple gold necklace, jade bangle

i've been wearing a lot of tanks and my favorite current/elliott cargo pants lately (which is definitely my #1 spring and summer staple!). i know these aren't the most exciting outfit photos, but this week is busy for me, so i need to be in errand-ready clothing. i expected to be very precious with the Hermes bag, but in fact it somehow feels like i've always had it. the canvas strap is pretty amazing and perfect for crossbody wear (is it sacrilegious to wear an Hermes bag crossbody? someone enlighten me!), and i like the shorter leather strap too. ah, options!!

how do you like to wear your bags? does it depend on the season? i think it's actually quite interesting how some people will always opt to have long shoulder straps for their bags, while others like to be hands-free and wear it crossbody, etc. let me know! :-)

  1. I like it worn cross-body, and you have the option of going for the sporty or dainty strap. I like the black tank too.

It really depends on the size of the strap how my bags are worn, the shorter the strap it's either on my wrist or arm, the longer is either shoulder or cross-body. Basically it ends up however it ends up! Though when I'm traveling or at amusements parks I bring my cross-body bag.

  2. Very nice. It really is the perfect size. I love shoulder straps but never cross body - I just hang it off one shoulder to give my hands space to move (I wave them around wildly whilst I talk, teehee). We'll see how I go with the Celine having to be held all the time... hopefully it arrives by the end of July!

  3. Awesome! All the outfits look fantastic with your Kelly. I personally won't seriously consider purchasing a bag unless it has a cross-body strap option. Aside from the ever important hands free necessity, I feel more secure with the bag across my body (should someone want to whip your bag from your should and run, its a little hard to do when its across your body). In these pics, I actually love the longer tan leather shoulder strap. It looks so lovely and somehow suits it really well. I think you'll continue to find more and more ways to wear this beauty. Enjoy!!

  4. Wow, the bag works every which way, you look fantastic, and i actually think the cross body option works really well. I remember seeing a pic of ines de la fressange's daughter wearing a Kelly cross body and it looked really good. Great find!

  5. Looking great in all three outfits, Miss sophie. Size 35 is perfect for you. :-)

If I have to pick up my favorite look among the three, it should be the third one. The color of the leather strap somehow complements the two-tone bag more IMHO and the print of the top gives the whole look more personality. But just like I've said, all three ways are fabulous. Enjoy your Kelly to the fullest!

  6. Pret a Porter P: i'm the same way- if i'm running around i have to be hands-free. i noticed that all my bags have a longer shoulder/crossbody strap option. i always need that second option for ease of use!

la Fille mal Gardee: i gesticulate a lot too! haha. looking forward to your Celine post when you get it :)

Eva: thanks! i'm particularly aware of the crossbody/secure option when i'm traveling. i like the simplicity of totes or bags that are open-top, but at the end of the day i always need my bags to have a zip or clasp closure for peace of mind...

Ammu: oh i'll have to see if i can find that pic. i hope these pics demonstrate that the kelly is quite versatile, in spite of its reputation as a posh lady bag.

q9y8: thanks!! i will. looking forward to seeing your style posts on your H bags too :) do you wear it with the shoulder strap or just with the top handle?

All my bags have the crossbody option too - such a useful feature.

  8. You know, ordinarily I associate Kelly bags with really formal outfits. I love how you have blended the bag into your style. Everything looks really good together. I like both of the straps, but I think the thin brown one works the best.

I really prefer wearing bags with either a shoulder strap or cross body. As much as I love the look of satchels and totes with small handles, I hate having to carry my bags by hand.

  9. I like the thin leather strap best, and anyone who isn't waited on and and foot needs a functional shoulder strap for sure. You look lovely!

  10. Adorable. You've picked the perfect Kelly for your lifestyle and fashion sense. Glorious. Hmmmm, maybe the Bolide is not my dream bag. Maybe a classic Kelly is rising in my esteem. :)

  12. Ammu: thanks for the link! that photo is sublime!! :D

jennifer & lin: thanks! i know - i will occasionally carry a bag in the crook of my arm, but usually that's a temporary shift of weight while i get my keys or something. the shoulder/crossbody strap is such a feminist detail, i say!

Aesthetic Alterations: aww thanks!! you are so sweet. :) feel free to email me if you've any questions on the kelly. i really think it is much more versatile (in the retourne style) than it seems!

    mesconfessionsparisiennes - thanks!

  13. it's an incredible bag! lucky you. :)
i love all three outfits. great pants. current/elliot- love that label.

  14. I like the way it looks with the long strap, personally. But then again I wear smaller crossbody bags because I feel like it's less fussy. I lean towards leather because it's durable and seasonless.

I also like the way the Kelly looks with all three outfits, especially since the utility pants are a nice contrast to the structured nature of the bag. I really like the tank in the last outfit too.

  15. style odyssey: thank you!! yep those current elliott pants are pretty much going to be packed along in every trip.

Austere: thanks for stopping by my blog! :) that's one of the reasons why i like this kelly - it's structured but a bit slouchy at the same time...i guess that's how my entire closet tends to be!

  16. I like the long strap + short strap combination since I tend to switch from wearing my bags either in the crook of my arm or on one shoulder. I like the thin tan strap best, but I also really like the way yours looks held in one hand by the short strap -- not necessarily pragmatic, but very chic!

Also, love the J. Crew tee in the first photo! Is it the linen tee?

  18. Love the casual way you're styling the bag, which is quite the lady bag. I think a Betty Draper/Mad Men styling would be too precious and stuffy and look too uncomfortable. I like how you're just jumping in and taking the bag as an everyday bag and, in return, it's giving all of your outfits a unique, quirky polish. I'm actually a huge fan of clutch bags, and I'm going to try to make my large envelope clutch my everyday bag this coming semester. I think there's just something so light and airy about tackling the day with just a clutch in hand!

  19. Rachel: thank you! :) i think this muultiple-strap design is what makes the Kelly a lot more versatile than the birkin. i've become more aware of not straining my shoulder/back by constantly wearing my bag on my shoulder, so i'm trying to switch it up hand-held and crossbody more. the jcrew tee is cotton, actually. on sale last year and one of my key basics! :)

Preity Lama Tamang: thank you! :) and thanks for stopping by!

0000: hehe, i don't think i could ever do a total 'lady' look. i'd be way too fidgety and it would probably only work as a Halloween costume, ha! it's funny, while out with a friend the other day i wore my bag and she remarked that 'it's a really high maintenance bag'. but really, i think the way that wearing Hermes works for me is precisely NOT to wear it or treat it that way...i like thinking of it as a wildcard accessory that can switch things up either way. but 90% of the time it'd just be a really beautifully made everyday bag!

  20. Really love it as a hand bag but pretty much love it every way! I suppose as a handbag it might look cuter with more ladylike outfits, whereas cross body is great for a more 'utility' look. I am consumed with jealousy for it anyway!x

  21. Oh, that's such a beauty! I'm sure you'll love it forever. I also like the thin leather strap, and that entire outfit is perfect!

  22. Wow, I had given up on the thought of buying a Kelly as I thought it was too ladylike for my usual wardrobe, but this post has definitely got me thinking about it again! Just for reference, how tall are you and what size Kelly? It looks great on you!

  23. BeeFarm: thanks for your comment! :) i'm 5'4 and this is a 35cm kelly. FYI, it does make a difference in the size if you get a 'retourne' style, which is what i have, vs a 'rigide' which is the much stiffer and formal looking kelly with the seams on the outside. the rigide kellys all look bigger because of the much boxier seam construction.
