review: Shanghai designers

Flying Scissors leather cuffs by Shanghai-based designer Tali Wu, with my favorite Skagen Denmark rose gold watch

well, so much for being inspired by color back in September. i've only made a handful of purchases in the past two months, and everything is either black or grey. are my New Yorker habits catching up with me? perhaps. or maybe it's a response to the lack of Daylight Savings Time here in the mainland. (sigh.) regardless, i can happily say that all of my purchases have quickly become everyday favorites. i've been wearing the Flying Scissors leather cuffs daily, and they feel almost like amulets. they are the perfect amalgam of punk/rock and cute. maybe i'm biased because i'm wearing them with everything these days, but i think they add just the right dose of texture and dimension to the simplest striped shirt or tee.

i love the rad name (if i were a superhero, i'd want to be called Flying Scissors!) and logo, attention to detail, and that each piece is individually handmade in Shanghai. there's a 1-year warranty for every leather accessory and handbag from the boutique, which should be standard for all accessories designer labels, no?
i like that the studs are individually wrapped in lambskin leather and then fastened to the bracelet. from afar they have a soft, mixed-metals effect.

now one of the coolest (and coziest) things i own: a sueded-texture and silk printed vest from Shanghai label Content
anyone know which film this is from?
a wool blazer lined in silk, also from Content. i scored this and the vest on major sale (they're both from past seasons), yay! it's so rare that something off the rack fits so perfectly, as if it were custom tailored. the cut of this blazer reminds me of Dior Homme - super slim through the arms and a sleek lapel with single-button closure. i love the seaming details throughout the front and back.

i'm curious - do you wear any favorite jewelry or accessories on your wrist? and what are the things that you can't stop wearing/buying right now?

  1. I love those cuffs! The look reminds me of Balenciaga giant hardware. And from the lead picture, they look like they're made of metal.

I've wanted to start my "arm party" (thank you, Man Repeller for the term) but I just can't seem to. I don't know if I just can't find anything that will tickle my fancy (and fit my budget) or if I'm just not kooky and creative enough to start it.

I am saving up for a good, will-wear-for-life watch, though.

  2. I'm quite boring when it comes to wrist action - I just wear a watch, and any bracelets are passing fancies. I also end up taking them off halfway through the day - I think i just don't like the feeling of jewellery. Can't stop wearing: slippers and sandals and shorts. Not together in one outfit, but I miss them after covering up for the cool weather in Europe.

I love the look of your leather bracelets - soft metal is a great way of describing the effect.

  3. I love the cuffs!
I know it's not everyone's cup of tea, but when dressing so classically and sticking to mostly monochromatic pallettes I think it's nice to add a touch of individuality with unusual jewellery.

  4. Those cuffs are a very cool. I don't know what movie is on the back, but it looks like Rosario Dawson to me. I like the lapel on your blazer and your striped top.

I just started wearing bracelets recently--rhinestone ones--I finally found some that fit my miniscule wrists. Most of the time they don't even show since I always wear long sleeves.

  6. Wow. That blazer is KILLER. Kind of Jil Sander, in its own way. I like your bracelets too - great on someone your age, height, etc.

  7. the cuffs are quite cool! i haven't been wearing my usual wristwear. in the summer it was too hot and i haven't gotten them out again- maybe will do that soon.
    vest and blazer are awesome.

  8. oh, this is fun! These cuffs are spunky and punky and do give neutral outfits a kick. Except for my watch, my wrists are usually bare. I do wear bracelets, bangles and cuffs more in the warm weather months but I think I find they are somewhat annoying under my jackets or long sleeved items in cold weather - I don't like when they catch on things. I also find some cuffs make it uncomfortable to type. But they sure do look cool. I've been wearing a certain gold locket necklace the most lately. :)

  9. A little while ago, I bought a Modcloth bracelet that looks like a measuring tape (I wrote a post on it...) At any rate, I wear it all the time and everyone seems to love it. It's also great for me because I find meaning in the symbol.

  10. @dontaskmetosmile haha, arm party is right, TMR is an awesome blog! i know - the little studs totally remind me of Balenciaga's giant hardware. i don't like them on the bags but i love these cuffs!

  11. @lin i'm generally that way too, except i find leather cuffs less cumbersome than clangy metal bangles or whatnot. now that it's chilly, the leather cuffs are also cozy now that it's chilly here in SH!

are you wearing your gorgeous watch a lot these days then?

  12. @catssaymeow thanks! :) i also love that these are actually small enough to fit my tiny wrists. usually bracelets are huge on me.

  13. @Prêt à Porter P miniscule wrists here too! i tend to roll up my sleeves a lot so i realized my leather cuffs would show. i also like the look of the Hermes studded cuffs.

  16. @chic_e i wear these slightly higher on my wrist so they don't get in the way of me typing or anything. and the studs are rounded so thankfully no snagging on anything! i'm sure your necklace is getting you loads more compliments ;)

  18. I like everyday jewelry :) I always wear my gold Nixon watch and a cheap thin silver ring band (on different fingers depending on what i'm feeling)

  19. You should definitely have that jacket copied in several fabrics while your in Shanghai. It's so rare to find a jacket that fits so well. I love the linen lining.

I love jewelry. It really personalizes an outfit. My favorite bracelets and cuffs are from Tiffany. I had them resized because my wrists are little, but they're all personalized with my initials or a little inscription on the inside. I'm big on inscriptions on the back of watches and inside my most precious rings too. It just makes it all the more special.

  20. @Alice /// VESTIGIAL WINGS i'm the same way - i love to wear some favorite things like my everyday necklace and a simple ring all the time. :)

  21. @Lindsay K i know, i'll have to do some planning for custom tailoring pieces. i'd love to get a linen version of this blazer done...

i love that you have inscriptions inside your jewelry! it's always really about the personal touch and the stories behind precious things.

  22. I love your bracelets! And I hear you on the color choices, everything I've bought over the last six months has been either black, gray or navy (wait, is "breton" a color?). We do look cool though, and that should count too!

I actually went out and bought an oversized wool sweater from Benetton's men's department yesterday - it is a great option for workweaar when all I really want to wear is my pajamas ;)

  23. Great cuffs. Since no one answered your question about the picture on your vest, it looks like it's from Death Proof directed by Quentin Tarantino. Thats Rosario Dawson. I'm not sure you'll like the movie, its pretty over the top violent but I enjoyed it very much.
