dark and stormy: trish summerville x H&M

sometimes i have to make an exception to glossing over fast fashion collaborations, and the Trish Summerville/Girl with the Dragon Tattoo collection is just that. this is quite possibly one of the coolest capsule collections i've seen from H&M in years. it's pretty much affordable Rick Owens and Balmain.

more images of the awesomeness after the jump.

i went to the flagship H&M in SH last night and the pieces look quite good. the highlight of the entire collection is the $199 leather jacket. we're talking $199 for an exquisitely designed nappa lamb leather jacket lined in cotton, people! the leather has a rad blistered/distressed finish, is wonderfully thick and buttery, and the shoulder and elbow padding details are really interesting. a little bit of armor and a fencing jacket meets dark avenger chic. or it could just as easily look like something off the Balmain, Givenchy, or Balenciaga runways. no wonder Colette has the collection in-store too.
i really like the hoodie too. the pleather pants, not so much. (though there is a leather skinny pant as well.) the hoodie is a versatile basic that has interesting details that you'd find in a more expensive 'designer basic' like Alexander Wang or Rick Owens Lilies. ditto for the drop crotch slouchy sweatpants.

the entire collection to me fuses the right amount of model-off-duty with elements of the biker/rock chick vibe seen in Emmanuelle Alt and Kate Lanphear and others over the years. definitely pieces here that you could work into your existing wardrobe without feeling like you're, well, in costume.

H&M has been getting some flak for its tie-in with the controversial film, but honestly, i think fans who have actually read the Millenium Trilogy will find a lot to love in the pieces. and yes, it's commercializing on some of the anti-establishment elements in Larsson's works, so it's not perfect. but in a world where there are fast fashion collabs every other day with hotshot designers, it's refreshing to see a talented behind-the-scenes costume designer and stylist featured in this kind of project!

what do you think of the collection?

  1. Actually I was more excited about this collection than Versace, even though I know nothing about the book. I liked the henley shirt underneath the vest. But at the end of the day to drive all the way up there just for that...is like eh...plus I'm not sure if my local one even carries it. But either way it's an excellent job with the styling.

  2. I skipped the Versace collab altogether - really not my cup of tea - but I think I might have gasped a little the first time I saw this one. I absolutely love it and I can wait to try on some of the pieces :)

  3. @Prêt à Porter P i thought the collection is available at a lot more H&M shops than just the main ones in NYC etc? well, at any rate i hope you do get to check it out in person somehow. the styling is spot-on. did you see the W magazine interview of Rooney Mara? she was styled by TS too and looked FIERCE.

  4. @Maja Piraja the leather jacket runs small, FYI. but it's still amazing!!

  5. @Maja Piraja oh, also, i ran over to the H&M flagship last night and even tho the smallest sizes in the leather jacket and some of the shoes were gone, there wasn't any madness around the Dragon Tattoo collection. i think, in contrast, there were LINES of people when the H&M x Versace collection hit Shanghai. i think the fact that very few people know (or care for the dark aesthetic) about the trilogy here means there's more selection for me!

  6. Thanks for the tip re: sizing! I think I might have to run over to the nearest H&M tomorrow and have a look. There is probably a bigger market for the Salander-esque here in Scandinavia, so fingers crossed there are some good pieces left when I get there :)

  7. There's a store locator on the website for it, and it didn't say it's even in my state. At the end of the day, it's stuff I don't need and it's stuff I already have.

  8. I quite liked it when I saw it online, but it looks like everything runs small. I am going to see it tomorrow and have a look to the hood. I haver never bought anything from H&M collaborations, too much publicity and there are never up to the expectations.... Let's see this one

  9. @lunaday the collection is part of the H&M DIVIDED line, which is their younger line and the sizing runs smaller than regular H&M. i got the hoodie and the leather jacket both in a EUR36 (the smallest size is a 34). i think other reviews have noted that the leather jacket runs small, but pretty much everything else is TTS. let me know what you think and if you get anything! :)

  10. I actually much prefer this collaboration to the book! :) It's not really my style as a head to toe look, but generally, everything looks so appealing and wearable, and good to know that the quality is great for the price.

  11. @S ha! i saw the original (first) film not long ago and let me tell you, it's not really the kind of movie to watch with a friend on a random weeknight :P dark, disturbing stuff. but i agree with you on the clothes - i'm very pleasantly impressed!

  12. Here in H&M/Stieg Larsson country I think that just about everyone will wear a piece from this collection, styled with the Acne pistol boots seen on, well, everyone, haha! So I'll pass on it, but I agree, I'm also pleasantly impressed by the looks.

  13. I am a fan of the books and the original movies. The subject matter is very uncomfortable (to put it mildly) but the characters are truly wonderful and modern. I wonder if Sweden will create some sort of "Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" tour where people can view some of the sites from the books/movies. Kinda like they did for Forks, WA for the Twilight series.
Anyway, I think you will ROCK that leather jacket! I would be interested in the leather leggings if they weren't faux. I've been looking for a pair of well made leather legging forever. Thanks for sharing this collection :)

  14. I went yesterday to see it, I didn't know they were such an small quantity of shops where they sell the collection. They are three in Spain, luckily two en Madrid very close to where I live... I guess they didn't make a big production which is good for the people getting something. I liked it a lot, the leather jacket is gorgeous and the quality is quite good for the price. I bought the grey wool cardigan and I love it, just the right amount of edge and I was in need of one.

  15. @Garderoben haha, on the spectrum, SH would be the farthest from Larsson/Salander country. i'm already seeing the leather jacket pop up for exorbitant prices on ebay! :P

  16. @chic_e there is a leather skinny jean/legging that i saw in the collection, actually. if they did a millenium trilogy tour it would be less tween-tertainment fun and a whole lot creepier, i'd imagine! :P

  17. @lunaday oooh awesome! glad you agree on the quality of the pieces :) is your grey one the knit hoodie with the drape edges? i love the maroon version too.

  18. Yes, that one, I tried the maroon one as well and I loved it but the grey was more me : )

  19. Oh, and there is a "Girl with the dragon totoo" tour of Stockholm (35 000 people have been taking it) ! http://www.stadsmuseum.stockholm.se/museet.php?artikel=109&sprak=english

Ha! No way! That's amazing and thanks for sharing. :) Do you think this will increase international tourism to Sweden? Or do you think its still mostly individuals from neighboring countries who are taking the tours? I find this all very fascinating!

  21. It's quite funny how there's a tie-in for the Hollywood version of the movie but not the Swedish version. I wasn't impressed with the Swedish version though, and am quite curious the Hollywood because I love David Fincher. I don't think I will buy anything from the collection but I really like the look of the leather jackets, as you say.

I don't know...the Swedish tourist organization seems to think that it will. Would you really want to visit Sweden after reading/watching the books/movies, haha?! It seems like the scariest place on earth! Stockholm has always been a pretty popular city to visit, though. And Like Lin said, it's funny that there's a tie-in for the Hollywood version of the film and not the Swedish ones, even on the tour!

ha, point taken ;) Well I know there's been plenty of flack for the American film makers copying or remaking international movies. Seems like everyone borrows from everyone in some way. I don't think that's anything new though. Kinda like how individuals copy each others' style. Guess its about making inspirations your own in some way. Like how miss sophie is doing it in this post!
