style notes: summer prints

i am really feeling prints with everything this summer, and NAP has a pretty fantastic sale going on right now so i just may cross an item or two off my wardrobe planning list this week.

longtime readers know that i can't resist a good leopard print when it's done right. i am perpetually inspired and obsessed with this fleeting image featuring an a.p.c. jacket several seasons ago:

she looks like she's in the Port Authority bus terminal, yet the leopard jacket makes everything that much better...

the a.p.c. leopard-print dress is one of my favorites this season - the perfect foundation piece to go with a bright sandal or bag. also love this similar one by steven alan, on sale as well!

what do you think of summer prints?

  1. I LOVE to wear prints in the summer, esp. tropical or leopard prints.

  2. I shy away from prints usually, so it's odd that I chose to wear a big baggu floral shirt this morning! I love florals in summer because I always want to match the beautiful English countryside, but I've always thought of leopard as a winter print. The print on that APC shift is very delicate, though... Maybe it could change my mind.

  3. I really like the APC leopard print this season. Sometimes, leopard print is a little too Roberto Cavalli/'Real Housewives' for me, but I love how the APC version is softer and almost cartoony.

Oh, and YES to the printed pants! I forgot to compliment you on this, but in one of your previous posts, you are totally rocking those printed pants!

    1. haha! i know what you mean! i prefer the more abstract-ish and subtle leopard print over a too literal one. i've been wearing the printed pants nonstop lately - it's perfect as an in-between to a skirt or more fitted jeans/pants.

  4. I have my eye on a linen shirt at Uniqlo in a tiny gingham/houndstooth-ish pattern. That is pretty much as close to a print as I am feeling at the moment. I hope they still have it when I go back for a second look.

    1. i think i've seen the one you're talking about. uniqlo here in SH is so competitive - half the good stuff is sold out of the smaller sizes as soon as it comes out :P

  5. I love prints in the summer - I feel like that's the only time I can actually get away with wearing them. I just feel silly wearing prints during other seasons.
That a.p.c. dress is so pretty.

    1. yah i think everyone should bust out with their craziest prints when it's hot and you just want to have fun and stay cool. though i do like a loud floral sometimes in the dead of winter.

  6. I love prints in the summer! I've been really feeling polka-dots and tie-dye so badly recently. I would love to have a polka-dotted dress, but it's pretty tough to find one that's just right. Polka-dotted trousers are pretty high up there on the spring list in the future too! Tie-dye is just so summery, Bonnaroo-ish and I would love just a great tailored tie-dye piece that's not, you know, a rainbow shroom trip haha. I love a great leopard, but I've always felt it was a little more fall than summer? I guess I just imagine actually wearing a cat and then I feel hot!

  7. I love prints - all year round usually, but I have more fun with them in summer! I want to make some lightweight cotton print dresses to welcome this new season.

  8. I feel like I still have a floral print hangover from 5 or so years ago, lol. I had so many floral blouses, tees, and accessories that I found them unwearable after a while. I've just been going with solids, stripes and an occasional geometric print lately, I love hunting for old silk scarves with geometric patterns or polka dots. And I'm tempted to try and find one item with a grayscale ikat woven or printed pattern this year.

My floral pattern-mixing obsession is currently only visible when it comes to housewares - I've always got a bunch of different floral sheets on my bed.
