foundations: the pencil skirt

currently craving: clean lines and the reassuring simplicity of easy breezy dressing.

late summer style for me is all about a relaxed pencil skirt of the cotton jersey or denim variety. add some classic heels or thong sandals (i am a big fan of these elegant leather ones by tkees), and i am good to go! my usual tomboyish style tendencies are giving way a bit these days to a newfound affinity for skirts. the unfussy ease of the pencil skirt is the perfect silhouette.

what are your late summer favorites?

  1. I've got a pencil post coming up:). For me they are a reversion to type. It's nice to have skirt on and not too much fabric. A leather one would be nicely subversive. Good idea.

  2. Hear hear! A pencil knee length skirts is so flattering and, as you pointed out, versatile. Plus after years of mini supremacy, I find this longer length more refreshing to the eyes.

    1. i'm a fan of both the mini and the pencil - they're all so versatile in their own ways!

  3. I'm never going to be much of a skirt girl I think, can't seem to move around comfortably in them - especially pencil skirts! I have a beautiful denim pencil skirt I rarely wear because I can't take big steps or run in it. I like the idea though - it's the style of skirt I like best. In theory more than practice.

    1. i think a denim skirt is trickier, but you should try james perse - i really love his line of super comfy cotton jersey pieces. if JP can convert me into wearing skirts that must mean something!

  4. ..but aren't pencil skirts restricting to walk in? That has always been my impression.

    1. mine too, until i got the james perse skirt recently - the soft and stretchy cotton jersey is really comfy and not constricting. ditto for a pencil skirt that has a slit in the back. i think fit is key here - if it doesn't fit on your waist/hips properly, the skirt will shift and bunch and feel restricting when you walk.

    2. Yeah, it's so important to try skirts out in the dressing room - sit down, stand up, try and do lunges, walk back and forth with big steps. If the skirt twists around on your waist or slides up, it just doesn't fit that well.

I've found that slightly wider skirts with pleats on the hips can be a good way of getting a similar look to a pencil skirt, with slightly more architectural details and more freedom of movement. I can hitch mine up just past the knees and ride my bike pretty comfortably! It does put a little more volume on your waist than a pencil skirt, but that can be fun to play with.

  5. I love a jersey pencil skirt. In fact, wearing one today :) Who makes the v-neck white t-shirt?

  6. Love, love, love pencil skirts, I do prefer cotton jersey they are comfy and the fit is much more forgiving....It's my go to for work with sandals, shoes or boots, t shirts, sweaters, shirts, they seem to go with everything and you feel so feminine on them.
