lookbook: a tomboy new year's eve

Clemence Poesy, rocking it

i'm a firm believer that one should always feel comfortable and at ease in order for the look to work. this is perhaps even more important when dressing for a night out. i'd like to think there's more to festive party dressing than cleavage-y glitter minis. this photo of Clemence Poesy has been one of my perennial inspiration images, and exactly what i want to wear this new year's eve.

there's something distinctly le smoking about a pair of classic black and patent shoes, and this NYE my favorite ferragamo bow pumps will be the foundation of everything. (if this look were a recipe, it would definitely be of the Mark Bittman kind.) the outfit: a slouchy silk equipment blouses and slim black pants. the accessories: a fun soiree necklace and simple mini diamond stud earrings for some sparkle and texture. final touches: a classic chain clutch, and the essential red lip, and this just might be the most comfortable dressy night out outfit ever.

what do you think? what are you wearing for new year's eve?

  1. I had planned on a silk shirt, black skinnies, and my varas, but upon returning home I realized I left the Varas in my basement at university. Alas, I think my plan B will be something like a black romper, cranberry tights, black oxfords, and a light wash denim jacket. But I also might end up looking at my closet, going "f*** it!" and wearing something else.

I'm really loving your choice though!

  2. I have almost this exact outfit, which I plan on wearing to Christmas Eve dinner. I think it also makes for a rather unexpected alternative to the typical glittery, overdone NYE ensemble.

  3. Love Clemence Poesy and your planned outfit!
I will spend new year's eve at my father's riverside home in southern India with family and friends. The plan is to wear an Indian tunic and shorts, drink whisky sours, hang out on the porch, listen to crickets and watch the river. Can't wait.

  4. I love your idea for NYE, and I might adopt it, depending on what we'll be doing. I was planning to wear a glittery wrap sweater dress, but black skinnies and a white shirt sounds heavenly.

  5. LOVE, love, love that look! To me it's essentially 40's which is an era I adore. I think Poesy's is an inspired modern version and your choices are perfect.
I haven't decided for myself yet but most probably a stretchy knee length pencil skirt, slouchy rayon knit for New Year's Eve then black skinny trousers and silk blouse for the first day of 2013.

  7. I think Lin posted this picture as an inspiration for her evening dressing up too. I agree that it's a powerful look because it might be one of the most universally flattering, achievable and comfortable night outfit.
