lookbook: cuffed jeans and church's brogues

i can't get this photo of Maya Villiger out of my mind these days. (props to how she's rocking a turban with denim-on-denim!) happily living in cuffed jeans and brogues at the moment.

i'm not wearing a particularly 'special' ensemble below, but i did want to show what the Church's look like on with one of my regular uniforms in case anyone is contemplating getting a pair.
Hope striped tee, favorite everyday necklace, J Brand jeans, Church's brogues

thoughts on proportion and styling: to wear old man shoes in a tomboyish / gentlewomanly way, i find that showing some ankle is always good. i was also pleasantly surprised to find that the Church's are sleeker on the foot than they look in photos online.

in terms of fit – the Church's do run a bit big. however, while Net-a-Porter says to size down a full size, i found this to be misleading: the shoe felt uncomfortably tight all over and was impossible to get on without the persistent aid of a shoehorn. i think a half size down from your usual size is more accurate; that's the size i'm wearing here. there's a bit of room for thin socks and/or a thin insole, depending on how you like to wear your shoes.

what do you think? do you have a pair of Church's?

  1. No but I would love a pair. I spent last year trying on numerous pairs but so many just didn't look right on the foot and like you say they need to be a little "sleek". Yours look stunning and worn just perfectly. I think I'm going to do the loafers as my concession to boyishness this year ... unless I find the perfect brogues! We have a Church's shop in Leeds where I shop - maybe I should pop in to torture myself a little more or maybe I shouldn't incase there is the perfect pair in their waiting for me :o(

    1. i always say one pair of pricey but well made shoes is better than 5 pairs of inexpensive, disposable ones. :) i hope you update if you find your perfect tomboy shoes!

  2. thanks for your comments on church's fit and sizing. i've been meaning to go to the new gravity pope shop and try them on.

i love rolling up my jeans when wearing brogues. i wish it were warm enough to have bare ankles!

  3. My feet are too large to look cute in men's style brogues. I appreciate the look on others but they don't fit my style statement. Whew...money saved. Love your posts!

  5. I LOVE these! I have been wanting a pair for ages. Did you get yours from NAP? as they have been out of stock there for a while. With the sizing, did the full size down feel tight in the toe box/length? I can handle shoes that are tight in the width to start off with as that always moulds to my feet, but I can't handle it when the toe box is too small.

  6. I have a pair of the loafers, but these are great too. Can't go wrong with brogues. My dad always compliments my shoes when he sees me and I'm wearing a pair! It must be because he can actually understand this style :)

  7. I really LOVE these and yours look just perfect! Still kicking myself for missing out on a pair last year, it's rare to see it in my size so I shouldn't have hesitated. In the meantime I wear my vintage Bally version which is higher up the ankle, they've been worn so much and are so useful. I would even try to wear them with skirts and dresses and channel my inner Miss Marple :-)

  8. Love this look on Maya. I love cropped jeans and brogues but always worried my feet are too big!

  9. Those Church's brogues look perfect on you. I've gone into Church's on Brompton Rd many many times just to admire their shoes. None will ever fit me as they'll never make anything in my size.

  10. I love brogues. I have a trust pair of RCs, but have wanted a more feminine looking pair for a while.

  11. They suit you! I have to admire from afar- brogues don't work for my narrow feet.

  12. So awesome. I'm coveting a pair of black ones or dark brown ones to add to my mini-collection. Ever since my first pair I'm totally addicted. I got these boots:

And then magically found these 50% off:

(I got the nude ones). I know they're pricey but I don't have a single regret over either pair, I wear them a ton and they just seem to get better and better with time.
