style notes: year of the snake

i'm ringing in the Year of the Snake this weekend with a big batch of homemade sweet and sour pickles (via Kylie Kwong's easy and delicious recipe – by the way, her cookbook is fantastic). i'm also slightly obsessed right now with finding a perfect (minimalist, not too literal) snake ring. i love the elegance of the ancient ouroboros symbol in vintage and contemporary jewelry, as interpreted by St. Kilda (left). i also like the abstract, modernist version by melinda maria.

are you celebrating lunar new year? what are you doing, and what do you think of serpentine jewelry?

  1. Love how delicate the left one is. The right reminds me of a Cartier ring (in a totally good way).

Can anyone recommend a good tailor in NYC? I have an old silk bomber jacket of my mom's that's warm and oh-so-light but it just doesn't look right as is.

  2. love snake jewelry, snake print, snake anything, really. i think it can be incredibly fashionable and classy. love the delicate ring on the left. i am a big fan of victorian serpentine jewelry. check out magwildwoodscloset on Etsy for a victorian serpentine find. found a great turquoise/gold ring there for my anniversary last year.

  3. One year I made dumplings for Significant Other and me. This year we might walk to Chinatown and buy a chop for Gong Xi Fa Cai. Or stickers.

  4. I'm not sure if you have heard of Meadowlark - but they do a snake ring. They also have rings with gems where the snake wraps around - I had one of these but then my fingers shrunk and it didn't fit ANY finger :( But yeah, so for the snake ring! The simpler the better x

  5. I definitely am a fan of snake rings too. I've been eyeing one by Grace Lee (formerly Oli + Me) - it is amazing!

  6. That modernist version is very cool. A great reinterpretation. I know Catbird sells a few snake rings (https://catbirdnyc.com/shop/search.php?mode=search&page=1&keep_https=yes) — it looks like they may be what mel is talking about.
