foundations: the white canvas sneakers

recipe for summer: bare legs + bike + classic Supergas

the sneaker has been the fashion story for over a year now. but really, a pair of classic kicks never goes out of style. nothing says summer to me more than bare legs and my white canvas Chucks. in addition to being comfy and seasonlessly chic, they also make your legs look instantly tanner...always a big plus in my book.

my go-to summer sandals are still my go-to sandals, of course. but nothing beats a trusty pair of old-school kicks for weekends in the city, and all-day vacation touristing.

i'm all about the low-tops – via carolines mode

i'm looking forward to wearing mine with denim cutoffs for a bit of red-white-and-blue this 4th of July.

what about you? do you wear white sneakers? low top or high top?

  1. I purchased white Keds on a whim before leaving for a quick trip to New York last summer. I just needed something that would allow me to walk around the city comfortably since I was going to do a lot of it. I haven't worn them since! I just don't know how to style them. I feel awkward and out of my comfort zone, but I would love to take them out more.

    1. cuffed jeans/cutoffs and dresses would go really well, no? :)

  2. I have to say I love white sneakers. They are the only white footwear I feel comfortable in. I have the classic white Converse which go with just about everything but I also like the simpler almost school girl type ones but they don't suit me as much. If I had the legs of any of the girls above, I'd just go for them with a mini or shorts too.

    1. it's been so hot here lately that the only viable option is shorts with a lightweight shoe! ughhh humidity...

  3. not likely, i wore them enough when I was a kid that I don't want to do it again. the last pair of sneakers I had were white pumas, very comfortable.

  4. Navy Converse low-tops (with an arch support insert).

  5. I have the Converse ones, low top. I'm not usually one for such casual items, but I kept the Converse habit from my teenage days and still find ways to pair them with my current outfits. I guess it shows how versatile they are. I love to dig them out for chilly spring days, when it's not quite time for sandals, but when I still feel like wearing summery colours! But like Sue, I don't quite feel like wearing them with shorts though :)

  6. I'm debating if I want a white pair or a black pair of canvas sneakers. My school uniform always involved a pair of white shoes that I would wash every weekend because it got so grungy - so maybe I'm rather traumatized by the whole notion of white sneakers.

    1. i quite like the worn-in / unpristine look of white chucks that have been loved and worn everywhere. i don't think i've actually ever washed a pair of shoes, but it's a nice option to have with canvas sneakers!

  7. I am all about white Converse with no socks. I also have a pair of high top CDG Converse but find I don't wear them in the summer- something about the high top makes my legs look kinda dorky.

    1. i love the look too but how do you wear them sockless without getting blisters??

    2. I think my feet are just disgustingly tough after years of such behavior :(

  8. I don't actually have a pair but I couldn't agree more. I just bought a pair of faded floral sneakers off NAP (Mulberry) which I'm hoping will fit this description. Such a good summer staple and comfortable too! :)

  9. I don't own white sneakers, but enjoy my Converse camouflage canvas sneakers and Lanvin black satin sneakers from time to time. At the moment though I can't seem to tear myself away from my Trinas!

  10. Agree they're classics - I love them! At the moment I have high tops and looking out for the low during the sales.

  11. love converse, and i have some volleys too (although they don't last the same). i used to wear floral print dresses and cons all the time, it was my indie kid staple wardrobe! i really want a low-cut cream or navy pair, but they do cut my legs off at a weird spot and i just look short and dorky. i've got awhile to think about it anyway, it's only winter here. i've been wearing cons and wide legged trousers, one of my favourite 70's silhouettes.

  12. I love my off-white Chucks, which are very dirty and beyond saving, will probably buy the exact same pair when they fall apart. I also have a great pair of white high-tops from a Swedish brand called Gram which I bought six years ago, I really love those because they have a slimmer cut and look better on me than the Converse high-tops. I never liked dark colour sneakers even though they're probably more practical - I like the freshness of pale canvas.

    1. indeed, though i think your broken in chucks are cooler than brand new ones. but you're right, pale canvas is so classic and fresh for spring/summer.

  13. I've been wearing Converse since I was a little kid, but currently, I'm switching between black and white Supergas. They're really comfortable and feel a bit more durable than Converse.

  14. I agree with Lin, darker colors were never for me, and in fact my obsession with white began with shoes I think. I remember even waiting to inherit my mother's wedding shoes! (woah, your blog just took me back). But right now I'm doing pink Keens. I was actually going to ask if you can update this post or do a follow up with a roundup because I'd love to see your picks.

  15. It's funny, I have sneakers in every color *but* white. Maybe it's time to add a classic pair!

  16. White sneakers always bring back a bit of childhood nostalgia. As a child I always wore Keds (perfect for the narrow foot) or Supergas (so comfortable, durable and I like that they don't have the cultural reference that Converse have). I haven't a pair in years...

I'm all about showing off the legs in the summer;)
