style notes: thoughts on fall 2016

hi again, i can't believe we're halfway through October!

now that we're back to sweater and leather jacket weather, i'm feeling newly inspired again with all of the familiar signs of autumn.

my apologies to readers who checked back from time to time over the past few months. i didn't want to post just for the sake of posting without real inspiration, so it felt right to take a breather and give this space a bit of a break. (for those of you so inclined, the archives are always accessible in the bottom right bar.)

wardrobe intel:
there are some promising notes at one of my go-to shops. at the start and end of the summer i found a number of excellent and well made blazers and vintage-inspired dresses from j.crew. it really feels like some of the old 'crew is making a comeback. compared with the last few years, there's a noticeable difference in the improved fit and quality of materials. small but important details that had languished – linings, working cuff buttons, pop of colors under the lapel, quality fabric in general – have returned, at least in the pieces i purchased. i haven't seen any of the knits, and it's still a bit of a mixed bag, but the online reviews for the individual items are very helpful for honest fit and quality thoughts. as we head into coat weather, for the first time in a while i'm actually looking forward to the new f/w offerings from a chain retailer. great news for all of you who are looking to add a few timeless wardrobe pieces at a good price point (the sales are still fairly regular, and quite good!).

reading list:
it's been a while since i bought any personal style books, but i'm looking forward to pre-ordering a copy of the new garconne, spotted via lin's blog. at a quick glance, it looks like a longer-form hardcover book version of The Gentlewoman, a good sign. will report back!

how is autumn where you are? have you come across any discoveries or shopping finds lately?

  1. Welcome back here :) I love the black juniper dress made in California by Taylor Stitch. I discovered the brand on a trip to SF. I am also thrilled about my Falke merino tights to get through New England winters. I like them more than Wolford merino tights because of the comfy waist and cotton inner finish.

  2. Glad to see you posting again!

J.Crew has definitely stepped up their quality lately. I bought a pair of their high rise cords and they're perfect - although it's somehow 80 degrees in New York right now so a little hot for them!

I've been having luck with online consignment shops. It makes me very hesitant to shop retail as the price and quality of second hand items is much better.

  3. Welcome back!

I bought the Everlane Chunky Knit Cotton Crew sweater in black, and I'm dying to have a chance to wear it, but not in these temps! J Crew Matchstick jeans in white, AG The Beau destroyed jeans, and a pair of taupe suede ankle booties from Born. But that's just the beginning. ;-)

  4. Hello again! It's too hot where I live and my hopes for sweater weather wane each day...unfortunately I've been feeling uninspired and bored with my closet. Not sure what I want to do with it or add to it these days

    1. i hear you on the uninspired feeling. i was feeling that way with the fashion space in general earlier this year...but sometimes a lull is just what one needs to reconsider and reassess.

  5. I started a project back in April to wear everything in my closet. It's October now and I have yet to repeat an outfit! (I'm only counting weekends, since I basically rotate the same things to wear to work). It made me realize how I truly do not need more stuff. I did replace some basics, I found the 'perfect' tee from the Gap, and my clothing purchases have dropped drastically. Hoping to continue through the winter!

  6. Yay! So glad to see an update on your site!

Autumn in SF has been unseasonably warm. I've been in a bit of a wardrobe rut, but might challenge myself to do what your friend Koko did and challenge myself to wear everything in my closet. In terms of purchases, I'm in a very lazy mode. I'm practically living in my Chloe scalloped flats (sometimes alternating them with navy velvet Anniel pumps), my distressed Ralph Lauren jeans, and James Perse tshirts.

How are you? I'm actually going to be in NYC in December 8-11. Would love to meet up with you if you're around!

    1. hi Grace! let me email you re meeting up when you visit :)

it's liberating to be not too caught up in the fashion cycle and just rediscover what you already have. now that we're getting into coat weather i'm pondering a few new items, more soon on the blog!
