foundations: Louis Vuitton SC bag

the SC bag is the perfect bag. it is one of those dream items that in real life looks exactly like how you imagine it.

the leather is the closest to Hermes that i've seen and really divine - a naturally grained calfskin that is supple, thick, and luxe. from the leather to the stitching to the hardware - everything is perfectly done. you can love or hate LV, but out of all the luxury brands, LV is one of the few that really turns out a solid, quality handbag. (at the top of the top, of course, would be Hermes.)

the LV Sofia Coppola bag is, much like the muse and designer herself, the embodiment of quiet luxury at its best. i've never really paid much attention to the monogram bags (though some of the artist collaborations have been neat), but this one immediately went to the top of my dream wishlist when it came out two years ago.

if only this is all i had to pack on all my trips...via self service

mine is the regular size, as i felt the PM version was a bit too small for my purposes. part of the charm of the SC in my opinion is the slouch factor, and i also wanted the flexibility of being able to use it as both an everyday and travel bag. (it is certainly hardy enough to be stowed under a plane seat!) the photos above were taken before i left for SH, and in the end, after much hemming and hawing, i decided not to bring my SC with me. of course i was kicking myself as soon as i got off the plane and saw some casually rich woman with her burgundy SC in line in front of me at airport immigration. there have been a few more sightings of the SC on the arms of chic girls in the French Concession since. sometimes, i really really miss the other half of my closet...

i've seen more than a fair share of luxury knockoff bags (Celine, Hermes, and Chanel are the top hits) at the notorious shops on Xinle lu, but for the most part there are few SC knockoffs to be found. the relative unpopularity of it here in China attests to the under-the-radarness of the SC, which is one of the qualities i love about it. (a quick google search does yield up a ton of SC replicas online in the US that curiously all have telltale elongated top-handles.) if you really love this bag and if it is feasible for your lifestyle and budget, i'd highly recommend being patient and doing some serious planning/saving/pre-owned luxury researching. there are altogether too many terribly expensive "It-bags" out there that are not up to snuff, but it's heartening to know that the SC is really a special piece.

my favorites all together: Flying Scissors cuffs, chan luu bracelet, skagen watch, Boyy bag

i tend to wear a lot of solids and neutral colors in my day-to-day life, so recently i've begun to collect various accessories to keep things interesting. when i was younger, i used to be overly minimalist and would shy away from more 'out there' pieces. now, i'm the exact opposite!

some of you may remember that i was a bit obsessed with leopard-y accessories last month. well, my favorite new wardrobe addition is the Boyy slash bag, another end-of-season multiple-markdown score.

H&M tee, 360 cashmere cardigan, isabel marant scarf, 7 for all mankind jeans, Boyy bag, isabel marant dicker boots (also here; lower price alternatives here)

the sides of the Boyy bag unzip or zip up depending on how much space you need. i'm wearing it here in expanded mode, and it pretty much holds everything that my Balenciaga City holds. there's even room for a (non-compact) umbrella!

the Boyy slash bag is such a new classic in my opinion. the leather (a finely grained lambskin) and texture of it up close reminds me a bit of the leather on the Proenza Schouler PS1 bags, except Boyy's leather feels thicker and more durable. the hardware and chain straps have a nice, substantial feel to them without being heavy - exactly how you'd want them to be. best of all, you can wear it three ways:

1. shoulder or crossbody with the leopard flap out
2. a more low-key version, folded over with the leather side out
3. an oversized clutch with the chain strap detached

it's a very chic, well-made bag all around with utilitarian attention to detail. if you're considering one, i highly recommend it!

in heavy rotation these days: the silk/velvety screenprinted Content vest that i scored on sale in October. it goes with everything quite easily in spite of the fact that the entire back of it features a printed scene from a Tarantino movie.

i think there's something so modern about vests (a.k.a. gilets [zsee-lays]) that's ideally suited to how women dress today. it's a great and easy way to add some visual interest or texture to a look, and even if it's a thin layer, the vest functions for warmth nicely without adding bulk. i also love a cropped furry/chunky knit vest of the shearling variety, but am still on the fence about how to wear that without looking like i've thrown on a shaggy bathmat.

after a year of constant wear, the IM dickers are still in excellent shape - they're a lot less delicate than they look. ditto for my balenciaga city, which only seems to get better with age. picky splurgers take note: these two items are definitely time-tested investment buys!

here i am playing tourist with my boyfriend at Lujiazui earlier this week - it's such a treat when the skies are blue and the sun is shining over the Shanghai skyline!

my marant coat, golden goose boots, and MBMJ bag here are all major sale scores from last month. the isabel marant xavier/new 'bator' coat is very cozy and surprisingly warm, thanks to the soft padding throughout the lining. i love the black and white nubby tweed on this one - it kind of reminds me of Edward Gorey's crosshatching drawings, and gives the coat a very nice weight without being too heavy. NAP had sold out of the 0, but the 1 is actually perfect as it's a little longer and the perfect mid-length. the sleeves are slightly cropped to a bracelet length, so they hit right at my wrist. i was a bit nervous about the fit and material as i didn't have a chance to try it on before ordering it online (had to get my boyfriend to bring it over for me), and IM Etoile pieces can be rather hit or miss. but all in all, the xavier coat is worth every penny, and my new favorite fall/winter foundation piece.

everyone needs a Little Red Bag in their life: it's cheery and versatile and way easier to wear than bright red lipstick! i'm still thinking about this lovely little Steven Alan bag that's on major sale right now. it kind of reminds me of a cross between a vintage Coach and a Mayle baby billie with the turnlock, suede, and leather trim details. this would be a gorgeous little bag for day or night.

it's always so nice to see thoughtful details like little zipped compartments and functional design (love the little turnlock pocket in front), even if the bag is a small one. i really don't like excessive ornamentation on handbags. i think the first season's collection of Steven Alan handbags was quite strong - they reminded me of some of my favorite vintage Coach bags in the simplicity and elegant shapes and sturdy-looking leathers. i'm really looking forward to new designs for spring and next fall.

i love the adjustable crossbody/shoulder strap. i could totally see Michelle Williams wearing one of these in her signature quiet, chic way.

Chinese New Year is coming up in January (year of the dragon! whoo!), and i'm on the lookout for something small and red to add to my collection. it'll be fun to add an (auspicious) pop of color to usher in the big celebrations here in Shanghai!

h&m dragon tattoo collection leather jacket & hoodie, uniqlo tee, seven jeans (similar here), barneys co-op flats, esdesigns necklace

the dragon tattoo leather jacket is probably the best and one of the only impulse purchases i've made all year. that, and my christmas gift for myself.

those of you who are longtime readers of this blog know that i have, shall we say, a particular weakness for leather jackets: my trusty, all-time favorite Rick Owens-ish one, and an elegant rag & bone biker jacket that i left back in NYC. therefore, do i need another black leather jacket? absolutely not. but you know, sometimes you have to go with your gut and make an awesome impulse buy because it's just too good to pass up. not to mention, the trish summerville version reminded me of...

the ever chic and salander-esque queen of leather jackets...who else? the gorgeous and lovely Freja.

i'll admit, i am also a bit paranoid that i will wear through my beloved yaya leather jacket if i keep wearing it the way i do...it's already had to be aired out after several run-ins with halloween body pant and various smokey bars and clubs in SH. as unnecessarily decadent as it sounds, my new trish summerville x H&M leather jacket will serve as a back-up. because, you know, when you have absolute wardrobe favorites, sometimes you need a back-up just in case. it's also got thicker leather, so it's quite a bit warmer as well.

which brings me to what i will rhetorically call The Biker Question.

one of lin's recent posts on clothing and self-expression got me thinking about this. i mean, i certainly don't own a motorcycle and my somewhat risk-averse nature prevents me from riding one anytime soon. contrast this with a lovely friend of mine and former college roommate who is not at all interested in fashion, but who happily arrived to sunday brunch in downtown NYC last year on her brand new harley. she rides it around the city across the queensborough bridge and everything. needless to say, my other friend and i were super impressed and amazed by her genuine, bad-ass fearlessness. so on the one hand you have my friend the biker (who, of course, has a fully functional leather motorcycling jacket), and then at the other end you have me, the biker-jacket-obsessed...style blogger.

it really gets to the crux of why we dress the way we do. i find the dichotomy in my case rather amusing, but of course i'm not going to give up amazing leather accessories and jackets just because i'm not in a punk rock band or biker club.

what do you think? is there any item of clothing that reflects such a dichotomy for you? or a special wardrobe piece that unleashes some sort of irrational, backup-hoarding impulse? ;-)

sometimes i have to make an exception to glossing over fast fashion collaborations, and the Trish Summerville/Girl with the Dragon Tattoo collection is just that. this is quite possibly one of the coolest capsule collections i've seen from H&M in years. it's pretty much affordable Rick Owens and Balmain.

i went to the flagship H&M in SH last night and the pieces look quite good. the highlight of the entire collection is the $199 leather jacket. we're talking $199 for an exquisitely designed nappa lamb leather jacket lined in cotton, people! the leather has a rad blistered/distressed finish, is wonderfully thick and buttery, and the shoulder and elbow padding details are really interesting. a little bit of armor and a fencing jacket meets dark avenger chic. or it could just as easily look like something off the Balmain, Givenchy, or Balenciaga runways. no wonder Colette has the collection in-store too.

i really like the hoodie too. the pleather pants, not so much. (though there is a leather skinny pant as well.) the hoodie is a versatile basic that has interesting details that you'd find in a more expensive 'designer basic' like Alexander Wang or Rick Owens Lilies. ditto for the drop crotch slouchy sweatpants.

the entire collection to me fuses the right amount of model-off-duty with elements of the biker/rock chick vibe seen in Emmanuelle Alt and Kate Lanphear and others over the years. definitely pieces here that you could work into your existing wardrobe without feeling like you're, well, in costume.

H&M has been getting some flak for its tie-in with the controversial film, but honestly, i think fans who have actually read the Millenium Trilogy will find a lot to love in the pieces. and yes, it's commercializing on some of the anti-establishment elements in Larsson's works, so it's not perfect. but in a world where there are fast fashion collabs every other day with hotshot designers, it's refreshing to see a talented behind-the-scenes costume designer and stylist featured in this kind of project!

10. blanket jewelry roll - it's like a Pendleton mini blanket for your jewelry! a travel jewelry roll (tuck in your baubles and go) is both essential and stylish.

to Ugg or not to Ugg

Ugg classic short vs classic tall?

i never thought i'd come to China and be on the hunt for Uggs. i mean, i had gone through the entirety of the 2000s without buying a pair, when the whole celeb-style (yes, Gwyneth Paltrow, i'm looking at you) Ugg craze took America by storm. however, circumstances here are forcing me to reconsider my Ugg-free wardrobe...

apartments here in SH are often colder than outside in the winter. drywall and insulation are pretty much nonexistent. there are A/C wall units that work as heaters, but it's very expensive to run them and they're not nearly as effective as central heating, which no one has here in the south anyway. Beijingers and other residents in northern China, though, have the luxury of central heating and sometimes also floor heating! so, i'm gearing up for a bone-chillingly damp winter (small space heater? check. grandpa cardigan? check. lots of tea? check.), but the fuzzy house slippers i got from Carrefour aren't going to cut it when it dips below 50 degrees here.

i must admit, i really like the idea of a luxuriously warm pair of shearling houseboots. my hands and feet are always freezing cold in the winter, so these would make a big difference. it's nice that there are also products to clean and protect the shearling, which i'd imagine would make your boots last longer.

as it turns out, China is the worst place to be if you're trying to get Uggs. given that i am in SH, there are fake Uggs everywhere. ranging from synthetic-everything ones around ¥100 to the Hotwind (a huge shoe/accessories chain store here, kind of like Nine West) ~~genuine shearling~~ suede and shearling-ish versions that go for ¥499-¥600. on the other hand, real Uggs at the Ugg store at Plaza 66, the luxury-brand mega mall go for - get this - ¥2,300, which equals almost a whopping $400 due to insane import tax and distribution mark-ups. online boutiques in the US don't ship Uggs internationally. Ugg Australia will ship Uggs to China, and other countries outside the US, but it's $90 for shipping fees alone...and that's before any local customs fees. go figure, the one time i really want to get a pair, and it's damn near impossible to get them!

i'm thinking of asking my boyfriend to bring me a pair from the US, but then again, if i'm just wearing them around the house, would the cheaper Hotwind versions suffice?

so i need your help, lovely readers. do you have Uggs, or an Ugg-like version? how does the sizing run? i am usually a 6.5, but tried on the 6 at the Ugg store and they felt tight and my toes went all the way to the toe seam. the 7s fit much more comfortably with a little room in the toebox. do you wear them at home only or as regular boots too? how have yours held up?

update: got myself a pair of the Ugg classic short in the chestnut (low maintenance color, and the original!). the shorter length will be perfect for wearing around the house, and i think they look cute with skinny jeans too. can't wait to get them when my bf visits soon!

3. a leopard calfhair small/medium bag. i am a little obsessed with the Jerome Dreyfuss one, but i also really like the clean lines of the j.crew collection leopard edie.

4. instax camera

5. fingerless cashmere gloves in a bright, cheery color

6. the amazing Alexa Chung x Madewell leopard boots. yes, i am a little bit more obsessed than usual with leopard this season.

7. some sort of vintage statement costume necklace.

8. a grey cashmere slouchy sweater to wear with favorite skinny jeans and aforementioned all-purpose biker boots.

9. marc by marc jacobs bianca hobo. it is the one classic and super easy to use bag that is missing from my collection. i like the understated direction that MBMJ has been taking this season - i had one MBMJ bag four years ago but sold it because it didn't fit my style, but the line consistently comes out with great leather quality and durability for the $$. tumbled calf leather, yummy.

10. Uggs*. this warrants another post, which i will do later this week. i am preparing myself for a collllld Shanghai winter, where poorly insulated apartments demand some sort of über warm and cozy houseboot option. more on that later.

11. leather bracelets. i wear my Flying Scissors cuffs every day, and got a chan luu wrap bracelet from a Gilt credit. they add just the right amount of color and texture to a simple uniform.

7. Marc by Marc Jacobs USB keychain - my plasticky USB just broke off my keychain, so i'm looking for a fun and durable version that will double as a little charm. found!

8. Karen Walker sunglasses - the tortoiseshell frame and purple lenses are so, so rad.

9. baggus in nylon and leather - can't recommend them enough. i've gifted them to family and friends in the last two years and everyone raves about how much they love theirs.

soooo, my dear readers, if you are like me, and have been pining after that iconic Isabel Marant 'bator' coat from seasons ago, it has re-appeared in this season's etoile line as the 'xavier' coat. i am a selective fan of IM pieces, and this one has been on my wishlist forever. sizes 1, 2, ~~and 3~~ are still available on Net-a-Porter.

a jacket/coat like this epitomizes how the sophisticated woman really wants to dress all the time. it's for the woman who dresses for herself (and other women) first and foremost. is there something Man Repeller-ish about it? absolutely. the genius thing about the Isabel Marant bator/baki/xavier is that it's loose, boxy, and deflects the mainstream male gaze (that obnoxiously dictates that women should dress at all times to exhibit their figures) from all angles.

it's alluring and a perennial favorite - i imagine Coco Chanel would have one too if she were a downtown girl these days. the 3 c's of confident, comfortable, and chic are all embodied in this one unassuming, yet indispensable item of clothing. you kind of imagine it's your boyfriend/husband/lover's coat that you stole, and yet it fits and drapes just so.

also, the color is a goes-with-everything neutral that flatters all skin tones: a gorgeous textured grey tweed. exactly what is missing from my small collection of coats and jackets. i had a blazer in this tweed from H&M some years ago, but it was a bad poly/wool blend and the fit was wonky.

the fabric looks like it's a fine quality bouclé wool and alpaca: 68% wool, 20% alpaca, 12% polyamide / lining: 100% cotton / padding: 100% polyester. as you know i am a bit of a natural fibers fanatic, so this predominantly wool/alpaca blend passes the test with flying colors. as does the all-cotton lining. nothing irks me more than an icky acetate or polyester lining on an expensive jacket. i'm also intrigued by the padding - it looks like such a cozy blazer/blanket coat, no?

i would wear this a million ways - with steven alan shirts/black skinnies/ankle boots now; with a sequin top/leather leggings/heels for a night out in dead of winter; with a dress and pointy-toe flats in spring...the list goes on.

the holidays are coming up, so this is my splurge purchase/gift to myself for the season.

the subtropical temps are playing hard to get these days. all i want is for the weather to stay in the high 50s so i can stomp around Shanghai in ankle boots, leather jacket, and a giant scarf. my IM dicker boots are holding up surprisingly well given that i've already worn them all over the city, and i haven't been precious with them either. also can't stop wearing my uniqlo black skinnies lately. they're insanely comfortable and fit just so. the best of cheap and chic.

for years, i never wore sunglasses because all the ones i tried on in stores fit me poorly: they'd never sit on my nose right, or the frame would be too narrow. pretty much all the styles that i loved had this issue, with perhaps a few exceptions being thin wire-frame sunglasses that looked like those Transitions prescription glasses that change colors indoors and out. i remember a guy in college who had those glasses, and they'd always be half dark and half transparent as he sat in class. they were distracting, and not in a good way!

sunglasses are probably one of the few accessories that are both entirely practical and utterly conceptual: they reference so many iconic personas. (a certain Vogue editor without her sunglasses? impossible!) see:

two years ago, i saw the photo of Yasmin Sewell and fell hard for the clubmasters. i got myself a pair, and they were gorgeous and well made and lovely, yet they still didn't fit quite right. you can guess what happened. i loved the idea of the Clubmasters, but never really wore them. they languished in their case for months, until i ended up selling that pair to a lovely fellow NYC'er...who i'm sure is rocking them stylishly these days. back to sunnies square one for me.

and then, by chance, i stumbled across online Oakley's 'Asian Fit' collection.

yes, the name is a bit odd and potentially offensive. it's a bit of an awkward name, definitely. do you have to be Asian to wear these? of course not. perhaps this particular ergonomic fit could use some re-branding, but for all intents and purposes, my Oakley Asian Fit sunnies are the only ones i'ved tried on that really fit just right.

granted, when i bought these online, i was pretty skeptical. but when they arrived and i put them on for the first time, it was a revelation. no more squinting! no annoying nose slippage, even during humid summer days when i'm running around. they don't pinch at my temples, either, which mean they're wide enough for my face. because they don't slide down my nose, they are also resting at the right spot on my cheekbones. and finally, the bridge/nosepad is designed deep enough so that the sunnies aren't pressed too close to my eyes. have you ever had that annoying experience of wearing sunglasses where the interior of the lens sort of presses up against your eyelashes? not comfortable!

another thing regarding quality and construction: i would say that since Oakley is first and foremost a sporting and surf brand, the functionality of the frames and lenses are therefore vastly superior to your typical 'Fashion' sunglasses. i was pleasantly surprised that the Oakleys were also quite nicely designed and don't scream 'athletic gear'. my Oakley AF sunnies are solidly constructed out of a handmade acetate frame, block UVA/B/C and blue light rays, and the lenses are also impact-resistant. you can choose lenses of different light-blocking gradients as well - mine have the VR50 Brown Gradient lens, which have an all-purpose coverage.

we all talk about the perfect fit when it comes to clothes, shoes, and other accessories, but sunglasses are something that can be as hard to 'fit' as the perfect pair of jeans. in fact, because most sunnies are designed as a 'one-size-fits-all', it can be much more difficult to find the right pair that fits and flatters, as most stores don't even bother to carry different ergonomic designs. just like body shapes and silhouettes, not all faces are the same.

p.s.: i like that Ray-Ban also stocks 'asian fit' versions of their iconic wayfarers (search for 'Full Fit sunglasses' on their site).

well, so much for being inspired by color back in September. i've only made a handful of purchases in the past two months, and everything is either black or grey. are my New Yorker habits catching up with me? perhaps. or maybe it's a response to the lack of Daylight Savings Time here in the mainland. (sigh.) regardless, i can happily say that all of my purchases have quickly become everyday favorites. i've been wearing the Flying Scissors leather cuffs daily, and they feel almost like amulets. they are the perfect amalgam of punk/rock and cute. maybe i'm biased because i'm wearing them with everything these days, but i think they add just the right dose of texture and dimension to the simplest striped shirt or tee.

i love the rad name (if i were a superhero, i'd want to be called Flying Scissors!) and logo, attention to detail, and that each piece is individually handmade in Shanghai. there's a 1-year warranty for every leather accessory and handbag from the boutique, which should be standard for all accessories designer labels, no?

i like that the studs are individually wrapped in lambskin leather and then fastened to the bracelet. from afar they have a soft, mixed-metals effect.

a wool blazer lined in silk, also from Content. i scored this and the vest on major sale (they're both from past seasons), yay! it's so rare that something off the rack fits so perfectly, as if it were custom tailored. the cut of this blazer reminds me of Dior Homme - super slim through the arms and a sleek lapel with single-button closure. i love the seaming details throughout the front and back.

after two months here, i've found some seriously brilliant local designers. more posts on some of the amazing talent in the next weeks, but this month's shop talk post is about Content, one of my favorite boutiques in Shanghai.

the Content girl is a fearless urban avant-gardist with perhaps a degree in media studies, and an abiding love for the sharp, dramatic silhouette. however, she could just as well be a quiet but powerful dresser, a devotee of intelligent and inspiring design. really, anyone with an open mind for experimentation and an appreciation for well crafted clothes could find something wonderful here. there's a bit of Helmut Lang and Rick Owens scattered throughout the designs, though the overall pieces stand on their own with the unique imprint of the designer's take on "clothes as a form of media" in the urban landscape. unlike some edgy stores, you don't have to do a 'total look' to find a wearable gem to add to your existing wardrobe.

one of the strengths of the collections is that there is an evenly executed focus on fabrics, tailoring, and concept. colors are mostly muted neutrals, though there are some gorgeous colors this season (mostly blues and oranges). many of the pieces - like the overcoats, blouses, and blazers - are expertly tailored with unique wool, cotton, and silk or natural/synthetic-blend fabrications. prices and fabric content are clearly labelled, which makes the browsing experience much more pleasant (you'd be surprised how often this is not the case in even pricey shops in Shanghai...).

i tried on a dove-grey wool blanket coat with an asymmetrical, Rick Owens-esque drape collar that fit perfectly at the shoulder and slim (but not too slim) through the sleeves. for someone who isn't normally swayed by expensive coats and outerwear, this coat was seriously tempting. true to the brand philosophy of clothing as a vehicle for media expression, screenprints of film and photographic images are also a signature design element at Content, which add an additional witty layer of visual texture.

as with many shops in Shanghai (regardless of high or low-end), sizing runs small. the available sizes are S, M, and L, and there are often only one or at most a handful produced of each style. for reference, the M fits me just right as i have broader shoulders than the average Shanghainese girl with my build, which for better or for worse reflects the typical anti-vanity designer sizing practices here. however, you also have the option of getting something tailored-to-fit, or doing a custom order. i love that about many designer shops here.

for a high-end independent designer boutique, prices are reasonable (especially for NYC standards, it's not that expensive for a well-made young designer label) and range from ¥500-¥2,500, with some special pieces hovering in the ¥3,000-¥4,500 range. (the exchange rate is around $1 : ¥6 these days.) if you're in Shanghai and into this aesthetic, definitely make a stop at Content!

i try to follow the same philosophy for my toiletries that i do for my wardrobe, with an emphasis on balancing longevity, cost, and effectiveness. for the daily necessities, my standbys are no-frills, tried-and-true classics like Cetaphil and Clinique moisturizer which are also very budget-friendly. (a large pump bottle of Cetaphil will last me about 3+ months, for example.) i will selectively splurge on products that are either staples (ie: Fresh sugar lip balm that i wear daily/year-round), or ones that are just exceptionally good and worth the price. it is my face, after all. that said, i can't stand clutter and keep my bathroom cabinet as pared-down as possible. after years and trial and mostly error, i've finally found a combination of quality but relatively minimalist products that work just right for me.

i have oily combination skin that is also somewhat sensitive, so oil-free and gentle are two key features of all the products that i use.

1. Cetaphil daily facial cleanser: cheap, the original, and the best neutral cleanser for all skin types. this is by far the best facial cleanser i have ever used. i tried using Shiseido's super luxurious and expensive foaming facial cleanser for a while before, but at around $35 a tube it quickly became obvious it was a ridiculous splurge for such a basic product. i didn't notice anything particularly better about the Shiseido versus my Cetaphil, either. i love the old-school appeal of Cetaphil: i get a lot of value for my money, and it never leaves my skin feeling taut or overly-stripped. i've used the 'gentle cleanser' version as well, but the regular Cetaphil daily facial cleanser gets my vote.

2. Clinique dramatically different moisturizing gel: my tried-and-true classic oil-free moisturizer - one pump is enough. the gel texture is just right, not too heavy, and delivers enough moisture year-round. i use a bit more in the winter when my skin dries out more easily.

(for dry skin types, there's the lotion version, which is not oil-free)

3. Clinique super city block (SPF 40): my daily must-have before i leave the apartment. i wear this like tinted moisturizer - it has a slight sheer tint that blends easily and you can never have too much SPF protection. i used the SPF 15 version of Super City Block as well, but my dermatologist tells me SPF 40 is the safer choice to ensure you get enough coverage.

4. Fresh sugar lip treatment (SPF 15): the best lip balm i have ever used - pricey, but so worth it. not waxy, no weird chemical taste, and lasts for hours on end. it comes in a twist-tube, which is also so much more hygienic for when you're on the go. my favorite is the sheer rosé - it leaves just a hint of rosy pink, very fresh and complements your natural lip tone. the original untinted version (in the photo above) is also great, alone or as a base for lipstick/gloss.

(if you're curious, there's a trial size duo of the sheer rosé and berry lip balm for the same price as a single tube)

5. Fresh umbrian clay mask: my go-to once-a-week detox clay mask. totally exfoliates and leaves my skin porcelain smooth and even-toned. i'm too cheap to go get regular facials, so this is perfect for me to do a deep cleanse once a week. it's pricey, but one tube goes a long way. i'm still using mine after about 8 months.

6. Fresh rose face mask: this is really the biggest splurge out of the lot. i keep mine in the fridge to keep the gel texture cool. i think of it as the complement to my Fresh clay mask - it's a total moisture/replenishing mask. forking over for a jar was painful, but it is the most luxurious 'DIY spa' moisturizing mask ever made. amazing. also one jar lasts for many months.

7. YSL gloss pur in #10: a vibrant poppy red gloss that's not too red for day but also works just as well for night. i love the texture of YSL lip glosses - not sticky or goopy at all, and just enough pigmentation.

8. Nars lip gloss: there's a reason why some things are bestsellers. i really like the entire range of Nars cosmetics, but i'm too cheap to buy/try out the other items like the blush/highlighter, so i stick with the pinky nude lip gloss with just a little bit of shimmer - a quick swipe will take me anywhere and any occasion. again, like the YSL, the texture is smooth and there's none of that gross stickiness of cheap lipglosses. a little goes a long way!

it is now finally cool enough for a leather jacket and scarf here, and i'm told that winter is not far off. (yeah, i'm still in denial that i am living in a subtropical climate these days...) these are my fall and winter wardrobe staples - haven't really changed for the past four years.

1. an amazing leather jacket that's perfect for fall, but you can layer up with in winter (ok so mine is not the Rick Owens original, but it is my most favorite item of clothing ever and has held up amazingly well after almost 4 years)

2. a tried-and-true, investment water-repellent heavier jacket that will only get better with age. perfectly roomy for layering in early winter

3. a reasonably priced but hardworking winter parka, warm and cozy and rugged enough to take you through mid and late winter

4. a versatile and artisanal shawl that doubles as an airport blanket/wrap when you're traveling

5. snowboots (my review here) that will take you through the slushiest and iciest blizzards while keeping your toes wonderfully toasty. i've since grown to love my Sorels in spite of their clunkiness.

6. the versatile all-around cold-weather boot with a nice walkable heel. i treat my black boots with Collonil waterstop to protect it from rain and snow, and wipe down any salt stains.

fall and winter are really my favorite seasons, mostly because i get to wear everything that i love that's either an investment purchase (ie: my leather jacket, my boots, the Barbour, etc) or utilitarian yet still chic. fall and winter clothes are to be taken seriously, and honestly probably about 95% of all my important or expensive purchases are f/w items. you can't really get away with shoddy materials or poor workmanship on clothes and shoes that need to keep you warm and stand against the elements. (some of my thoughts on my barbour jacket here.) these photos were taken last winter, but i packed pretty much everything i'm wearing (minus the snowboots and parka, as it never snows here). this is still my favorite cold-weather uniform.

(i mean, obviously not the real thing, just printed calfhair!) something about the fall temps that just goes really well with the cozy calfhair texture. a chic leopard print keeps coming back every year, and it's a bona fide classic in my book. in spite of its trashier cousins, a classy leopard print is quite a wardrobe standby.

bright lights and office ladies

the Oggi magazine 10th anniversary party at the Waldorf

a few days ago, my friend who works in the fashion industry here in Shanghai invited me to tag along with her to a magazine party, as she had an extra invite. the occasion was the 10th anniversary of the Chinese version of Oggi オッジ, the Japanese fashion magazine that's often identified with the 'Office Lady' (or 'OL' for short) look. not sure exactly what the American counterpart would be - Marie Claire? Lucky? anyway, it was at the grand Waldorf Astoria on the Bund, complete with a fashion show and prize raffle afterwards.

i felt like an anthropologist taking field notes.

some noteworthy events as the evening unfolded:

a well-known Shanghainese TV actress who also happens to endorse the brand of frozen dumplings that's in my freezer was the guest of honor, and caused a minor kerfuffle when she arrived. my friend and i may have accidentally photobombed some paparazzi shots of her as we were standing right behind her when the flashbulbs started going off.
the aforementioned Shanghainese actress (in the red dress) also wore 6" glittery platform pumps. my friend and i debated over how she could walk, while complaining about standing around on plush carpeting in our 2" and 3" heels. we also commiserated about all the free designer swag that celebs get.
at the prize raffle after the fashion show, someone won a piano!
seeing models up close reminds you how freakishly tall they really are. the fashion show featured mostly mainstream career woman looks, and some of the models even looked like they were 'normal skinny' as opposed to High Fashion Skinny (think Lucky/InStyle as opposed to Vogue/Elle).

they had a mini prize drawing of wristband colors towards the end, and yours truly ended up winning a nice little goodie bag with a palette of Bobbi Brown eyeshadows and a Tibi/Bobbi Brown cosmetics pouch. both of which may well come in handy this year, as i was just thinking that i didn't pack any make-up save for some lipgloss and powder.

the entire experience was quite fun. very interesting to see this other side of Shanghai. during the publisher's speech, i looked out over the tall glass windows framing the balconies of the banquet room and caught a glimpse of the bright lights of the Shanghai skyline in Pudong. it felt a little otherworldly at that moment, a bit Devil Wears Prada-ish.

i suppose i should thank the airlines for imposing ever-stingier weight restrictions on international luggage, because being forced to edit my bags down to 4 for the year has been a worthy exercise in the economy of style.

this post is a little long as it's a set of mini reviews for each of the ones i packed and have used a ton since i got here.

the Longchamp pliage tote is an old classic that is an absolute necessity; i used my first one (in navy) almost all the time for work for two and a half years and ended up giving it (still in excellent condition) to my mom after i thought i got tired of the style. no luck in finding an alternative! so, earlier this year, i bought this one in grey and have been using it nearly everyday as my default work/errands/bad-weather bag. the straps are long enough to make schlepping comfortable, and the best part is the full top zip: perfect for keeping everything secure and safe from pickpocketers (a constant concern here). among its other virtues is that, even though it's a fancy imported label here in Shanghai, Longchamp is just luxe enough to be well made and classic but still low-key enough to not scream 'status bag!' to strangers or your co-workers. at $145, i think this is why college students in Europe and the US use this as their bag of choice as the anti-bookbag bookbag, and why you could also use yours as the perfectly utilitarian day/work bag in These Recessionary Times.

Baggus (my fave: the breton-stripe baggu, though now there's also leather baggu!) have been super handy from day one. almost every grocery store or large mart (ie: Carrefour) charges extra for plastic bags, so it's indispensable to have at least one of my baggus with me at all times. i've plunked everything from books to random apartment objects to a week's worth of vegetables in my baggus, and everything always fits. the bright colors and fun prints are an added bonus to make errands and grocery-shopping that much more cheerful. i just washed all of my baggus in my washing machine and they dried on the clothesline in no time. if you don't have baggus yet, get some! they're truly wonderful and also a great gift idea. i also really like having a couple of zip pouches in different sizes to keep small odds and ends organized. i got a wonderful little three-compartment zip pouchette last year from Sammy Ethiopia, and it is made out of wonderfully buttery leather, perfect for keeping things tidy.

the vintage Coach saddle bag (JW Hulme's 'Legacy' bag is very similar) has been through many a rainstorm with me and miraculously any rain spots have always dried clean away. one of my vintage favorites and it is incredibly well made. the crossbody strap makes it really handy as a weekend, shopping, and touristing bag. i've seen the Hulme bags at Barney's, and they've got some nice tweaked details (like a few more compartments on the inside and some pen slots) that make it even more user-friendly. the leather on the JW Hulme legacy is nice and thick, a bit more rugged than my vintage Coach. the Hulme ones feel a bit stiff, but i think it will break in and soften wonderfully with use.

it was a natural choice to just bring one all-purpose evening bag that could cross over into all occasions. mine is a final sale Foley + Corinna clutch/evening bag from a few years back; this season J.Crew makes a similar flap clutch with a chain strap in an impressive array of materials: leather, silk, suede, leopard suede, and leopard calfhair. can't get enough of leopard right now.

finally, the Balenciaga classic city bag is really an ideal luxe bag for travel. it's lightweight and still low-key, functional (again, top zip closure and the little front zip pouch for your phone), and adds just enough edge to whatever you're wearing. yes this bag has been seen on every celebrity since it came out, and yes it was trendy as hell a few years ago and still has some iffy connotations if you're pairing a bubble-gum colored city with a juicy couture tracksuit. but the classic city in the classic neutrals (black, anthracite) has been around for over 10 years now...and the design just really works. i am a firm believer in wearing stuff that you like and that works for you, regardless of how coveted (or not) it is.

what i want to wear right now...but can't quite bust out my a.p.c. trench until temps dip by another 10 degrees.

i've been entirely too focused on recreating a comfort zone for myself in the past month to do much shopping, which is not at all a bad thing! one has to be a bit of a Lady MacGyver to move to a foreign city without any major mishaps. the past month has been utterly devoted to setting up my apartment, making new friends, stocking up on odds and ends from Carrefour, getting my bearings in the city (now i'm quite the unlikely veteran of the public transit bus system!), and organizing my finances and monthly budget. now that all of those priorities have been sorted, i've finally got some time to sit down and think about wardrobe planning for the next year.

my work here allows for a very flexible/casual dress code, so thankfully i've been able to pack mostly machine-washable clothes. because i have many of the basics and foundation pieces covered (ie: tees, steven alan buttondowns, fall and winter outerwear), i've been finding myself really drawn to 'statement' pieces and accessories lately. there are some really neat pieces from CONTENT, a local designer boutique that i'll have to do a 'Shop talk' post on soon.

i've always been an understated dresser, inclined to stay on the minimalist end of things. but something about Shanghai makes me want to push things a little. get out there and get experimental. allow me to clarify: there are a few main styles here, with super frilly/cutesy/trendy/'femme' being the mainstream look for pretty young things. then there's the edgy avant-garde kids with their CdG-inspired harem pants and geometric haircuts. not too many minimalist Sofia Coppola types around, though, unless you're talking about chic expats in the French Concession. i actually quite like the no-nonsense style of some of the middle aged aunties and retired old guys in their army jackets (of which my Rag & Bone utility jacket is pretty much an exact copy). there's an integrity there that surpasses flash and trends.

i think my wanting to find a few well-selected statement pieces from local designers has something to do with the fact that the locals here have a really brazen all-or-nothing attitude when it comes to their style. you can diss the overly ruffled, embellished 'mainstream femme' look that a lot of the young teens and 20something women are into, but i think you still miss something laudable. there may not be the same kind of sophistication that all the cool girls in NYC make so much effort to effortlessly pull off, but i almost perversely like that people here embrace color, ruffles, bling, and more ruffles. yes, it is often over-the-top frilly and tacky, yet occasionally i see something inspiring on a stylish girl...anyway, something to consider in small and select doses.

finally, several readers have asked about sizing. i usually wear my true size (XS) in Saint James. i personally prefer my breton shirts to have a somewhat slouchy and boxy fit, as i think that complements the stripes best. the sleeves on my XS Minquieres 10 shirts are a little long, but i wear them rolled up anyway so it's not an issue. the Naval II has a cropped sleeve, which i also like a lot.

where there's hype, there's hope. case in point: the infamous Isabel Marant 'bidou'/'lacow'/'laboy'/'forbes'/'dicker' boots (reviewed in my post here), which sell out like hotcakes every season.

if you really love the style but can't track down a pair or don't want to shell out the $$ on ebay or elsewhere, all of the brands above have pretty uncanny versions in taupe, black, and some other colors at a much nicer price point. the Steve Madden ones are slip-on (a shoe-horn might be useful before they've broken in), and heels are a little bit pointier but still stable at 2 3/4". the DVs and Madewells have the same side-zipper as the IM dickers, and have a 2 1/4" and 2 1/2" heel. all are definitely a very walkable height and practical for day and night.

there's something about a midheel neutral suede ankle boot that renders it an indispensable wardrobe item. it's got texture (the matte suede goes great with jeans, skirts, pants, leggings, bare legs, the list goes on!), comfort (get rubber heel caps and/or a rubber half sole to make the outsole last), versatility (spray every so often with a water repellent suede protector), and style. i've been wearing my current/elliott jeans and IM boots every day since it's cooled down some here.

as for care and maintenance: i sprayed my IM dickers (and all my leather and suede shoes) with Collonil Waterstop. don't be afraid to spray the taupe suede - just let it air dry for about half an hour - the Collonil is a clear treatment and doesn't darken or change the texture of the suede at all once it's completely dry. you can also buy a relatively cheap but extremely handy little suede cleaning brush and 'stain eraser' kit from amazon or your local cobbler shop. gently brushing helps get out dirt and dust, and helps keep the nap of the suede supple and soft.

my IM dickers have held up remarkably well, and still look quite new after about 9 months. i've been stomping around Shanghai and they look no worse for wear. although, with every well-loved wardrobe piece, letting the patina of age show through is part of the fun!

foundations: ma vie en denim

as cliché as it sounds, it's true: the foundation to a great wardrobe is a great pair of jeans. in my experience, shopping for jeans is like dating: tricky and frustrating when you're really looking for what you want. you fall in love, you fall out of love. you outgrow your favorite pair; you're ready to move on to the next. what worked for a while suddenly doesn't fit anymore. you get emotionally attached to that pair that you saw on Emannuelle Alt on a terribly chic street style blog before you even try it on, and when you do, it's about four inches too long, and you realize it's the endless French editrix legs that you really want.

and so it goes.

the worst is when you're in need of a specific pair, and you resign yourself to spending an afternoon trying on a bunch, to no avail. or, more realistically in my case, give up after about an hour of shimmying into ill-fitting pairs in poorly-lit fitting rooms. in the past decade, i've tried virtually every style: flares, wideleg, bell bottom, bootcut, straight-leg, boyfriend, raw, skinny, and the jegging.

flares and bell bottoms i will always associate with high school, the mall, and the platform Steve Madden sneakers i always wore them with to add about 3.5" to my height. wideleg, straight-leg, and bootcut jeans were my go-to in college, which i paired with my favorite Enzo Angiolini pull-on boots. i totally felt bad-ass in my favorite boots and jeans combo, hanging out in front of campus buildings and smoking with friends. then came the mid 2000s, when Kate Moss was photographed in a pair of tight stovepipe jeans, and suddenly the exiled ghost of The Tapered Jean was gloriously reborn as skinny jeans. i moved to NYC around then, and purged my wardrobe of straggly college and study abroad items in favor of my first pair of skinnies by 7 for all mankind.

in the years since, i've flirted with baggy boyfriend styles, bravely tried to break in A.P.C. raw new cures (sadly, it didn't work out), and updated my uniform of choice to skinnies and boots. this is pretty much what i've been wearing for the past five years.

the verdict after all these adventures and misadventures in denim wash and cut? many readers have asked about my favorite jeans featured in my past posts, so here it is.

current/elliott roller jeans | favorite yaya leather jacket | club monaco tee | vintage Coach kelly bag | HOPE by ringstrad soderberg ankle boots (also in suede here)

the current/elliott 'roller' jean is about as close to a perfect pair of jeans as i've ever worn. it's in between a skinny and a straight-leg jean. the classic dark indigo is a very clean wash, and i like that there are no discernible trendy details. the hem is finished and then unrolled so you don't have a bulky original hem to deal with if you want to cuff your jeans, which i do often enough (or when it's rainy out!). it's the perfect mix of that elusive, but oh-so-worth-it skinny slouchy fit. current/elliott tends to run a little big, so i use J Brand's sizing for comparison - i'm usually a 26 in J Brand, so my true size in c/e is always 25. the c/e roller fits just loose enough at the waist for a belt, and gets even better when you've worn it in. it's both slimming and comfortable - you don't notice that you're wearing jeans. the denim is a nice, old-school 99% cotton, not a spandexy one, and it's super soft. a nice bit of stylish swagger is included.

current/elliott just came out with a bunch of new washes, which is a nice testament to this best-selling style. i have two pairs - a dark wash and a medium blue one. some options:

the c/e roller jean in a classic, clean dark wash which will work rolled up or down for day and night
a nicely broken-in lighter wash on sale
subtly distressed versions in dark and light washes

this season i'm inspired by Tina Chow - the simplicity and quiet strength of her style. there's grace and sensuality and femininity within, and again, a comfort and ease to how she inhabits her clothes. case in point: her signature uniform - a men's white tee underneath a slouchy cashmere cardigan. sleek hair; clean, minimal makeup. the best part of it all is that all the pieces are imminently accessible and timeless foundation pieces.

it's also a perfect compact style uniform for travel. you could dress it up or down, depending on if you want to pair the look with a statement necklace, skirt, heels, etc.

shop talk: Urban Tribe 城市山民

this is the first in a series of new posts - my own version of Cintra Wilson's 'critical shopper' in Shanghai. i had posted about Urban Tribe on my blog two years ago when i first discovered it, and when i dropped by this time, i was happy to find that they have expanded their collection of mens and womenswear, accessories, and housewares.

the aesthetic is urban nomad, with a little bit of Rick Owens-esque details thrown in for dramatic flair. the owner/designer is Shanghainese, so all the clothes are produced locally, some handcrafted, and in small batches. does it all work, you ask? quite well, especially if you're like me and prefer to be comfortably chic no matter the day or season. colors are mostly muted, and many of the pieces manage to be slightly avant-garde while still remaining versatile enough to be incorporated into your existing wardrobe. i especially love UT's dedication to using natural fabrics - as many of you know, i am a bit of a stickler for natural materials. there are gauzy linen blouses with slim mandarin collars that would go well with a skinny black pant and ballet flats. i tried on a billowy indigo linen patchwork skirt that was reminiscent of the all-american denim skirt, except that its artful draping made me feel like a carefree runaway from a Junya Watanabe show - a good thing!

prices are on the high end, ranging between ¥550-¥1,800 for many of the items, but certainly reasonable given the prices of many French Concession design-conscious boutiques. clients can get a VIP card which gets you discounts for purchasing one or more items. the shop also has a small but burgeoning jewelry collection made from natural stones and silver, and in the back there is a section devoted to small housewares and ceramics - a great place to shop for gifts too! there is also a small garden area where you can sip a cup of tea and take a peaceful break from the din of Shanghai.

perhaps it's because i packed mostly neutral pieces, but lately i've been finding myself really inspired by vibrant colors and prints, especially in blouses. Shanghainese people are not afraid of either, which is so refreshing. when i walk to the bus stop every morning, i see a lot of women walking or biking along the winding longtang streets wearing colorful blouses and floral printed pants. i haven't had a chance to take many photos yet...but, in the meantime, check out this lovely woman's ensemble.

there is something fresh and slightly monastic in the silhouette and linen-y/cotton materials, no? i love that she's looks like she didn't think too hard or spend too much time putting the outfit together. and that she looks totally comfy and at ease.

i'm still adjusting to the belatedness of early fall weather here. things were looking good last week, when it hovered around the cool 70s and we saw one gloriously sunny day after another. this week, not so much. some of the mugginess has returned, it's again in the low 80s, andi find myself gazing forlornly at my still-unwearable blazer, leather jacket, and IM boots when i get ready in the morning. fall, where are you?

a Ling life

all of my favorites in a shirt: polka dots, silk-cotton blend, and a buttondown style

it has been wonderfully sunny and cool this entire week, but the last week and a half was another story. after my earlier post on the difficulties of adjusting to the sweltering Shanghai heat, i rifled through my clothes, and realized nothing i had packed (with the exception of some dry-clean only, dressy-ish silk tanks) was sufficiently airy, wash-and-dry, yet still 'coverage-appropriate' for stylish local dressing. apparently baring shoulders is a no-no, but tiny shorts are ok...go figure! so, with a mission to find a loose, blousy shirt, i went down to the shops at Tianzifang to take a look. i wanted to find something special and well made, not just a throwaway piece that i'd get rid of if i ran out of space in my suitcase.

at Ling boutique, i found exactly what i was looking for.

there are some things that i find myself looking for every season, regardless of the trends. a polka dot shirt is one of these perennial favorites. i'd describe everything at Ling as Japanese-inspired avant-garde meets Buddhist monk. their signature buttondown shirt embodies these design elements: airy and ever-so-slightly monastic inflections in a flowy silhouette and easy cut. the shopgirl showed me how to wear it three ways, as there are some extra mother-of-pearl buttons that allow you to ingeniously fasten the fabric to create different silhouettes. i immediately fell for the navy and cream polka-dot signature shirt, and also happily found a lovely grey houndstooth one in the sale rack.

loose, cotton-silk blouses = the secret to surviving the humid heat in style

these two shirts are the first purchases i've made in Shanghai, and i really love them both. i've been thinking about how to do wardrobe planning for this year, and i'm leaning towards making some carefully considered purchases from Shanghai designers and concept boutiques that will serve as either wildcard or collection items. will do a more detailed post on that soon!

p.s.: in response to LPC's question on prices: the signature blouses and designs at Ling are reasonably priced at a mid/higher-range boutique level, ¥580 for their current collection signature shirts and around ¥100-300 for items on sale (like the houndstooth blouse, which was ¥300). i'm still familiarizing myself with the local shops and designers, so this is only the beginning! :)

wash and dry

it's been a little over a week and a half since i got here, and settling in has been going well. in other small everyday news, i'm rediscovering the joys of having my own washing machine in the apartment.

of course, there is no dryer as locals overwhelmingly use clotheslines in lieu of expending the extra space and electricity. (or is there another explanation?) as much as i miss the unmistakably warm, softly scented feel of just-tumbled clothes, i'm taking advantage of the sans-dryer life these days. i brought mostly cotton/wash-and-go pieces, which hopefully will be both practical and budget-friendly.

this is a good thing, because as fastidious as i am about my sartorial obsessions, i'm also a lazy person who usually would throw most things in the machine and dryer, and everything else would get sent to the dry-cleaners. now, everything gets hung up to dry, and i'm getting in the habit of gently hand-washing and hang-drying some of the more delicate pieces (like the houndstooth print shirt i got from local boutique Ling in Tianzifang). ironically, not having a dryer is almost more convenient; i don't have to worry about accidentally shrinking something or ruining it, and there are fewer wrinkled clothes to deal with! it's nice when small inconveniences turn out to be the opposite. freshly laundered clothes on a clothesline also lend a homey air - it's a gloomy, rainy day today, but my bedroom is a little cheerier because of them.

foundations: the perfect breton stripe shirt

this is the perfect breton shirt. unisex. the ideal weight of drapey cotton jersey. slightly oversized fit. and made by the original folks at French company Saint James.

shortly before i left NYC, lovely blogger V alerted me to a flash sale on the Le Minor dip-dye breton shirts on Madewell's online shop. i ended up ordering a few colors in the XS and S, as i wasn't sure of my size. however, when they arrived, something wasn't quite right. i couldn't exactly put my finger on it, but after a few try-ons i realized it was the material.

given that it's the traditional fisherman's knit, the cotton is meant to be tough and substantial. however, i am sensitive to the 'handfeel' of fabrics, so i realized that i prefer a lighter-weight cotton that has more drape and give. if you're looking for a cool and substantial fall/winter breton that could double as a jumper, though, you should check out the Le Minor shirts. i still really love the cool dip-dye look, so here's hoping that they come out with some more styles next season.

a note about sizing on the Le Minor shirts at Madewell: i called and asked about sizing with the shop girls and the online staff, and got conflicting recommendations. i am usually an XS/0 and sometimes a US 2, so an XS was the right size for me, while the S was way too big with lots of excess fabric through the torso. the XS was not tight, and had room through the torso, and is a straight cut throughout. you should stay with your true size unless you are a little bustier or have broader shoulders. otherwise, you could size up, but i found that with the thickness of the material, the excess fabric doesn't really 'hang' all that well.

i ended up returning the Le Minor shirts before i left, and got two more of my beloved saint james shirts in the neige/gitane and marine/tulipe. really love the classic colorways of both...i will be wearing all my saint james shirts till they are threadbare!

as for sizing on Saint James shirts: i prefer the unisex styles like the Naval and the Minquiers 10 because i can wear the smallest size and there's just enough room for a bit of oversize/slouchy drape. the unisex styles are also longer in length, which i find go really well with skinny jeans and boots. plus, in case you accidentally put them in the dryer for too long, you have a little wiggle room for shrinkage and they won't be completely ruined!

Shanghai is famous for the local dimsum delicacies. perhaps the most famous one is the Shanghai xiaolongbao 小笼包, or tiny soup dumplings. i had the most delicious ones at Ding Tai Fung 鼎泰丰last night.

this was the first fancy dinner i've had since i got here last week. definitely pricey, but it felt good to sit down in a really nice space and savor some truly delectable fare. my friend and i tried three kinds - the house special (and all-time classic) pork, chicken, and pork/hairy crab. dumpling bliss! i think my favorite is tied with the the classic pork xiaolongbao and the pork/hairy crab, which was incredibly savory and rich. note to decadent foodies: they have foie gras xiaolongbao on the menu too!! those of you who recommended Din Tai Fung, now i know what all the fuss is about.

the markers of an exquisite Shanghai xiaolongbao: the dumpling skin is really really thin and delicate, and the small spoonful of soup inside is rich and flavorful. honestly the meat filling is almost an afterhought, though the filling of these from Din Tai Fung were just as scrumptious!

on to sartorial matters - it was cool but rainy most of last week, but now that blue skies and sunshine is gracing Shanghai this week, it is back to being HOT and humid. (my friend from London was telling me that he was wearing knit jumpers until he came here. ahhh what would i give for that!) it hit 90 yesterday and today, and i'm still trying to figure out how it is that the local women wear more clothing than me, yet i seem to be the only one sweating. a lot. is it just a matter of personal acclimation?

j.crew favorite tank - a year-round staple for me

i was in one of my jcrew tanks, lightweight current/elliott roll-up pants, and my birk sandals while running errands and going to my meeting today, yet i still felt overheated yet wholly underdressed amongst the bevy of young women wearing dresses, cap-sleeve blouses and silky skirts. i'm a bit frustrated at the moment with this resurgence of late summer heat, as i can't really wear any of my other clothes (ie: jeans, closed-toe shoes, or my slightly thicker breton shirts, etc) until it gets down to at least the low 70s.

help! does anyone with experience in humid climates have any tips? i'd wear my NYC it's-so-hot-i-can't-be-bothered standbys of tank top and denim shorts, except i seem to stand out as the only gal with broad-ish shoulders wearing a jcrew tank top. :P

i got in the other day and have been settling in nicely. still in the process of reorganizing things, but i've been incredibly lucky to settle in a wonderful apartment with all the comforts of home.

it's a relief to take out all the bulk from my luggage and see that i didn't overpack. as it turns out, i ended up editing out at the last minute my HOPE ankle boots and the Mulberry bays. i was a bit sad that they didn't make the cut, but the new weight restrictions for checked baggage leave very little margin for error. (yes, international airlines, your schemes to make yet more money from travelers are all too obvious!)

foundations: packing for a year - accessories + extras

here's the final installment of my packing series. over the years, i've realized it's all in the details and user-friendliness when it comes to packing handbags and accessories that are functional yet still stylish.

a few key attributes are:

handbags that are easy to get in and out of, but still have a secure top zip or flap closure
luxe design but still made from durable, quality materials that will stand up to weather
as lightweight as possible for maximum ease and portability
understated luxe - no logos, flashy bling or other ostentatious details. as many seasoned travelers know, low-key is universally the best way to go when you're in a new place or in transit

with all that in mind, here's what i'm bringing:

Longchamp pliage tote: all-purpose carry-all that's great for all sorts of weather. bonus: it's designed to fold up into a neat little square for ultra-portable packing!
Balenciaga city bag: lightweight and luxe and goes with everything in my wardrobe
Mulberry bayswater satchel*: gorgeous and hardy everyday/work bag. this is the heaviest bag of all of the ones i'm bringing, and for that reason there's a small chance that i may edit this out if luggage space/weight becomes an issue. however, none of my suitcases are packed full, and i am looking forward to breaking this bays in this coming year. we'll see!
vintage Coach saddle bag: simple, utilitarian, and stylish crossbody mini bag for ultra-mobile days, day-trips, etc.
chain-strap envelope clutch: all-purpose evening bag, for casual and formal nights out.
CdG red zip wallet: my absolute favorite that goes everywhere with me. red leather means it's easy to spot.
carry-on size laptop backpack: this doubles as a small carry-on for short trips, a rugged daypack for day trips, and a versatile and durable and TSA-compliant personal bag for long flights
Baggus: i'm bringing a five-pack of my favorite colorful baggus. perfect for groceries, shopping, etc. Baggus are the best!
colorful umbrella: the best quality ones i've found are from j.crew. they make them in fun, colorful prints each season, and i've been through many a blustery thunderstorm and no inside-out umbrella fiascos!

finally, even though i'm all for minimalist packing whenever possible, there are some special items that i will be bringing - namely, some favorite jewelry pieces and other extras.

style recipe for cool summer evenings: cotton/silk shirt + skinny cargos = easy breezy chic.

this is what i wore out to dinner and drinks with friends last night - it was a cool evening and i pulled out my 'dressy' pair of skinny cargos by j brand. these are the infamous 'houlihan' cargos, done in a dark olive cotton sateen that's fabricated from a softer, more comfortable material than the thicker/stiffer twill versions. if you're curious about sizing, the twill houlihans run a bit tighter in my opinion, whereas these run true to size and the sateen has just the right amount of give. these wouldn't look out of place paired with dressier heels, either. i think they're the perfect alternative to classic black pants for nights out.

the loomstate shirt was a lucky final sale find at barneys - it's made from a luxe, wonderfully light but not-too-filmy cotton, and the underside of the fabric is silk. i've no idea how they created this fabric, but the easy tailored cut makes it one of my favorite white shirts. over the years, i realized that i don't like crisp white for shirts; the color a bit too clinical, unnatural, and harsh against my skin tone. softer off-white and creams are much more interesting, and less high maintenance.

skinny and slouchy cargos will always be a key wardrobe staple for me. definitely packing these pants, the perfectly drapey loomstate shirt, and my trusty balenciaga city in my suitcase!

as always, i can't resist having options. after some back and forth, i ended up returning the two pairs of ballet flats from my earlier post. as much as i loved the jcrew leopard ballet flats especially (someday, when they go on sale...), after some deliberation it just seemed unnecessary since i already have a cushiony pair of Arche ballet flats and my beloved gold and black pointy-toe flats that could transition well from day to night. less is more, right? trying to live up to the motto.

on a related note, given the rainy summer and winter weather in Shanghai, a pair of leather sneakers would be more functional than canvas converse. going to donate my canvas Chucks to the local Goodwill later this week, along with some other remnant odds and ends from my closet.

sooo...i allowed myself a small purchase recently when i found a pair of Onitsuka Tiger Tai Chis on sale. they're the most beautiful 'graceful sneakers' that i've ever seen! these are the original Bruce Lee trainers, and were cheekily featured in 'Kill Bill'. i really love the old-school red, white, and blue colorway. they're lightweight and streamlined, but still have a durable tread sole, so i plan on wearing them on rainy days and for travel. and who knows - i may actually get in the habit of doing some early morning tai chi in these too. they will lose their pristine whiteness pretty soon, but i'm looking forward to seeing how these 'patina' over the next year.

update: (pardon the thinking out loud...) i just realized that the theory black flats haven't yet been taken to my cobbler for a protective half sole/heel cap. (i usually do this for shoes that will see a lot of wear, like boots, or dressier shoes that have a more delicate thin leather sole.) not sure i want to shell out the cash for that before i go. on the other hand, the gold flats are cobblerized and ready to roll. hmm...if i take out the black flats, my comfy black pumps can do double-duty. which means...bring on the gold and red!

my big suitcase is all laid out, but i've been dawdling a bit on actually starting the packing process. starting to anticipate a wee bit of homesickness i suppose, and i haven't even left home yet! the last time i was abroad for a year was when i just graduated college - i was 22 and young and carefree, a chainsmoking kid with big dreams, really.

since then, i moved to NYC, quit smoking, learned how to cook, met my wonderful boyfriend, and started my style blog. amongst many other things. i think a part of my procrastination on packing also has to do with the symbolic act of relocating, even if it's just for a year. i just have a strong, instinctual feeling that this is going to be a big turning point in my life and career. there's some bittersweetness here. i'm older, hopefully wiser in some ways, and my style has definitely evolved for the better. something else is different; i feel like i'm no longer running towards the boundless horizon of possibilities like i was when i was in college and always looking forward...but now i'm in the middle of my life and choices, and doing my best to navigate it. fumbling about sometimes, making mistakes, riding the learning curve. i tend to be a bit of a worrier, but i'm trying to focus on the positive, and the exciting opportunities that lie ahead.

foundations: the importance of being tailored

there's this brilliant documentary series on bespoke designer Ozwald Boateng titled Why Style Matters that i've recently discovered on Youtube. in the series, Boateng discusses his own style and design philosophy, and also interviews fellow Savile Row tailors, fashion journalists, and design legends such as Giorgio Armani. in one clip, Boateng interviews Suzy Menkes on Armani's revolutionary impact on the fashion world, and she says something really insightful:

"[Armani] understood something about the modern world, and I think that's with all designers...it's understanding the psyche of what's going on. It's not just making the frocks."

and at another point in the clip, Boateng notes that:

"Fashion seems so temporary. And yet, tailoring seems permanent. So that's one of the things I've balanced over the years, being very aware of fashion, without being totally entrenched in it."

i have to admit, i've always been really drawn to exquisite tailoring and all the quiet luxuries that it offers. on a technical level, i also really admire the craftsmanship that goes into a traditionally tailored suit. in the past few seasons, the whole 'borrowed from the boys/tomboy' vibe in womenswear seems to me more than just a seasonal riff on Annie Hall. designers like Phoebe Philo, Stella McCartney, and Isabel Marant have all made their own signature mark by fusing a 'tailored psyche' (or, in the case of Marant, a twist on the conventional idea of fit and structure) with ready-to-wear designs.

there's something stable, permanent, reassuring about an elegantly cut Celine blazer in our crazy, uncertain times. maybe it's the structure inherent in a tailored jacket, which vaguely references the military uniform origins of most menswear classics. i know that this is an ideal, that a Celine blazer is really quite far from many of our realities when we're watching the news and trying to stay on top of our finances and plan for other, non-sartorial goals in our lives. lin blogged about this as well last week. but at the end of a long day out in the world, i'd like to think that the clothes we choose to put on our backs can offer some protection, perhaps some consolation, and lift us a little bit above the din and chaos of everyday life. that, with the added bonus of an expertly fitted shoulder seam, is my idea of enduring style.

i'm trying to cook as much as possible for the rest of the summer while i still have my familiar kitchen. i'll be cooking when i'm abroad too, but it won't be the same. this is my tweaked version of Ina Garten's recipe, and it was delightfully easy (i substituted scallops instead of hallibut fillet), and so delicious. can't wait to have more leftovers today.

i'm going to Shanghai for a year. the last time i was there, i spent a lot of time strolling around and exploring all the small boutiques near Maoming road, Tianzifang and the old French Concession neighborhood. i'm really excited about what i'll discover about the city and its ever-changing spaces this time. there is something unique about every city, and Shanghai can be very intense in the contrasts of its sensory ambience - the smells, the frenetic rhythm of everyday life, the particular din of the rush hour traffic...yet all of this can quickly fade away when you duck into a teahouse or a tiny shop in one of the quieter neighborhoods. in the past, i've often gone in the summer, so i'm also very much looking forward to scoping out the street styles of chic Shanghainese in the fall and winter months.

foundations: packing for a year abroad - shoes

in an effort to kickstart the packing/planning process (yes, i am a bit of a control freak and can't just throw a bunch of stuff into suitcases), i laid out the shoes i think i'll pack this afternoon. kind of fun, this sort of visual brainstorming, though honestly i don't know how stylists and editors (ahem, Rachel Zoe and Anna Dello Russo) manage to schlep their multitudes of accessories and clothes across continents every season. (well, with the aid of assistants and sky-high baggage surcharges, i suppose...but still!)

thankfully, my work dress code for my year abroad will be very casual, so this frees things up quite a bit style-wise. i want to keep shoes to under 10 or thereabouts. everything i pack will need to be completely comfortable and hard-wearing. lucky for me, the winter will be cold but not snowy. so here's the seasonal breakdown as i see it:

fall: ballet flats, ankle boots, converse for bad weather/travel/whatever days
winter: ankle boots and tall boots
spring: ankle boots, converse, ballet flats
summer: ballet flats, sandals
*dressier occasions: ballet flats, grace booties, or red peep-toe pumps

i am very picky about my shoes and tend to splurge a bit on them, so in the interest of careful budgeting, i don't plan on buying any more when i get there. plus, i find that buying a pair of quality shoes is much more difficult when you're off your 'home turf'. so the idea is to bring a multi-tasking but not overly bare-bones set that will work for me across four seasons.

here's where i'm running into some trouble with the editing, though. everything above is fine for everyday and weekend, and the ballet flats and the red peep-toe pumps can swing more dressy occasions as well. however, there is the likelihood that i'll need to attend the occasional more conservative/business-y event, in which case i think i'd need a pair of regular pumps to wear with a suit if need be. another thought: even though the rachel comey boots are lightweight yet suitable for winter weather, my Margiela shearling boots are really cozy and comfy...and kind of remind me of home (odd that a pair of shoes can have that effect!). and what about a fun shoe for weekends/going out, like my gold pointy-toe flats or the strappy heels?

'jeans and a tee' is almost a cultural code phrase that runs the gamut of meanings. it is often used as a visual shorthand on invitations or work memos to discourage 'sloppy' dressing. (ok, so the club monaco tee has a couple of holes in it now, but i'll keep wearing it as long as it holds up...) for me, 'jeans and a tee' also happens to represent the simplest form of minimalist style. i consider this my grown-up uniform for most days.

i've been thinking a lot lately about how to distill my style into a compact, edited collection because i will be going abroad for a year starting this fall. i'll be in a relatively similar climate to where i live now, so luckily there won't be any extreme weather needs or limitations. nonetheless, packing a wardrobe for a year seems like such a daunting task! for the most part, though, i'm looking forward to tackling this now that i've managed to pare down my previously overflowing closet to the key foundation pieces. i'll be posting more about this in the weeks to come, and everything i'm wearing today will definitely be on my packing list.

rediscovering an oldie

today i pulled out a paisley printed cotton Gap dress that i hadn't worn in several years (the only Gap item that has survived many closet purges). in the past few years, i had slowly gotten rid of various pieces that i purchased when i was younger and replaced them with 'upgrades' - similar items that were made with better materials and fit better. sometimes, though, i got in the habit of upgrading just for the sake of upgrading. thankfully, i held on to this dress, which was something like $30 on sale.

as soon as i put it on, i promptly fell back in love with it and remembered why i bought it in the first place. it's a maxi length dress without being too maxi length, fully lined, and the cotton is wonderfully airy for hot summer days. this is also one of the few dresses that i feel completely at ease in and forget that i'm wearing a dress. i'm one of those people who for some reason just could never really get into dresses or skirts; but i think this is the easy breezy dress for the girl who doesn't really like them. paired with the oak mulberry bayswater (i swapped my black one for this one a while back), it's a fine alternative to my other summer uniform...the idea of a long summer dress with some flat sandals really appeals to me right now.

dressing for travel has its unique challenges.

space limitations and pragmatic concerns make it more like a game of resource maximization. i generally only bring low-key, under-the-radar accessories so as not to stand out or be a target for pickpocketers. i hate to pack heavy bags when i'm traveling, and over the years, i've realized that there are just a few key items that are indispensable. these are also all very inexpensive yet excellent quality - each item above is under $50 (with the slight exception of the watch, but you can find it on sale online quite easily). the Worishofer sandals in particular are like walking on pillows - there is a fantastic padded insole with a cushion for arch support, and the mini wedge is perfectly walkable. i think it's important to go back to the old-school source whenever possible; you could find a much more expensive version of the denim shorts or bag or sandals at an APC, but other than the heftier price difference, the originals are by far the best.

this is the truth about being an urbanite on the go: size really matters.

i have been searching for the perfect ultraportable laptop for years. actually, i'm still surprised that there really aren't any options out there that weigh less than 2 pounds. i have a Mac as my primary computer at home, but for travel and everyday mobility, i was really looking for something super thin and lightweight. i've scaled back on schlepping a ton of stuff in my everyday bag, but up until now, it was a real pain to add my laptop to my bag because it would always make things ridiculously heavy. i really don't want to develop back problems because i overloaded my handbag in my youth!

so when i found the second generation Sony Vaio P lifestyle PC on factory closeout online, i was pretty excited. not so happy, though, that they'd already sold out of all the other colors (white or black would have been perfect), and the only color left is hot pink. but i can deal. it's kind of punkish pink on a good day, right?

if you're curious about the general overview, enGadget has a slightly bitchy review here, and Mobile Tech Review has a nicer review here. i'm a Mac girl, but the Vaio P runs Windows 7, which is a speedy and slick OS, eons better than Windows Vista. it comes with an 128GB SSD (solid state drive), which means it's pretty accident-proof. i toted it around in my mulberry bag the other day and didn't even notice it was there, which is amazing considering this is 1.3 pounds and is a full-fledged mini laptop (the 11" Macbook Air is 2.3 lbs). if you've lugged around a handbag on your shoulder for a day, you'll know that every pound counts! other nifty design plus: the Vaio P is about the size of a standard business envelope, which means it will fit easily in almost any handbag.

i don't have particularly large hands, so typing on the chiclet-style keyboard is perfectly comfortable. there is a bit of getting used to for the small screen, but it's a neat widescreen format, you can easily adjust the screen resolution and, of course, increase text size on websites if necessary. the Vaio P has received pretty lukewarm to bad reviews across the board in the two years since its debut, but i think that has more to do with:

1) the fact that most people who are looking to get a portable laptop replacement end up wanting something that is suited for media entertainment (ie: an iPad) rather than actual computing/productivity...if you're looking for a truly ultra-portable mini laptop, this is the one.
2) the original retail was very pricey
3) many of the tech reviewers were guys who didn't really 'get' the portability niche

i'm really happy with mine. i can work on Word or Excel docs easily, browsing online and email is great with the really crisp, high-res screen. watching videos or streaming movies is fast and there are no issues with processing speed. i'm personally not a big fan of the touchscreen, so the iPad just seems like a pricey toy, and it has nowhere near the memory or processing power of the Vaio P. i had an Acer netbook, but you do get what you pay for - while the Acer was perfectly usable as a mini laptop, the processor was really slow, it is almost 3 pounds, and has a really clunky form factor.

Faye Wong (or Wang Fei, as she's known in HK and China) has always had a fantastic personal style that makes her stand out from the sea of saccharine and super-girly Canto-pop singers and celebrities. i really admire how she combines an avant-garde sensibility and minimalist grace in her artistic personae and everyday life. can you believe that she's 42?? truly the epitome of aging gracefully. also - i really want her hair. that pixie cut on her from Wong Kar-wai's Chungking Express always makes me want to chop all my hair off...

in my last post, i declared that i was done with shopping for necessary wardrobe pieces.

the question now is, where does one go from here?

it's certainly an idealistic goal that one could build the key pieces for a working, stylish wardrobe and then be done with it. for good. but i know myself all too well, and there will be temptations.

i've been thinking about a 'method' for navigating the art of (ir)rational choice (aka 'shopping') that categorizes it into several categories.

1) foundation - ie: a trench coat, a white t-shirt, jeans, black flats
2) wildcard - ie: that out-of-character handbag that you are completely enamored with (see lin's post)
3) impulse - purchases made by way of retail therapy
4) collection - ie: a rare, or vintage gem of a find that will be cherished and treasured
5) dream - ie: an Hermes handbag, an astronomically expensive wishlist item to save up for

for me, this breakdown of the various types of shopping makes my somewhat polemical last post a bit more manageable and realistic. will i be able to stick to a monastically minimalist philosophy from now on and never buy anything ever again? no. but now that i've completed the foundation and several of my dream purchases, most future temptations will need to be justified as either a wildcard or collection buy.

of course, we are only human, regardless of how disciplined we try to be. i like that there's an emotional component to shopping that makes it sometimes fallible and unpredictable, just like life. i'll be happy if i can choose wisely and make the occasional, well-considered purchase that will really become a meaningful part of my wardrobe and my life: always evolving, creative, and inspiring.

say what? but no, seriously. i think i've finally got the edited working wardrobe that i'd been building for the past few years. after catching a nasty cold, i took a break from blogging in the past week. the time off has given me space to think about matters of style and how it fits into my present life. i've also been thinking a lot lately about the logistics of such a working wardrobe - for instance, how does it translate to packing efficiently for a trip? how does it help me plan for something more complex - like a longer stint abroad?

since my vintage Hermes purchase-of-a-lifetime last month, i feel like things have settled down and i'm at a really contented place style-wise. there's a feeling of a sort of completion - which doesn't mean that i'm never going to buy anything, ever again...but i feel like i've finally gotten to the point where i really don't need to buy anything.

it's a funny feeling. but the truth is, i really don't like shopping. i try to do it in the most efficient and painless way possible. for the most part, it's the thrill of finding the perfect *something* that really gives me pleasure. shopping is just a repetitive act, almost a chore. so, for the past two years, i've been shopping in order to stop shopping.

it's an odd paradox for someone who loves fashion and style. i feel like this is a milestone for my blog as well. i haven't stopped experimenting with personal style, and i'm not sure what mine will be 10 years from now. but i think i've finally got the foundations to get there...for the long haul.

i've been wearing a lot of tanks and my favorite current/elliott cargo pants lately (which is definitely my #1 spring and summer staple!). i know these aren't the most exciting outfit photos, but this week is busy for me, so i need to be in errand-ready clothing. i expected to be very precious with the Hermes bag, but in fact it somehow feels like i've always had it. the canvas strap is pretty amazing and perfect for crossbody wear (is it sacrilegious to wear an Hermes bag crossbody? someone enlighten me!), and i like the shorter leather strap too. ah, options!!

vintage 1990s Hermes 35cm retourne kelly

deep breath. yes, this is the vintage hermes kelly of my dreams.

i had been stalking vintage ones online for ages, and saw quite a few boxcalf ones from the 1970s all the way to the late 1990s that i liked, but for one reason or another, they weren't quite right. until i found this one - it was a custom order kelly (hence the gorgeous and unique tan trim details), and the woman who originally commissioned it barely used it. the leather is a naturally grained leather (i think it's ardennes), and the tan trim is another leather (chamonix?). if anyone is familiar with Hermes leathers, i'd love to hear your thoughts.

i am completely over the moon. after i decided to part ways with the Chanel, i realized that a vintage Hermes would be the perfect combination of craftsmanship, design, and function. if you know where to look online and at reputable reseller shops, many vintage Hermes bags are actually not much more (and in many cases, comparable) in price to Chanel at retail...something to consider if you are looking to take the plunge on an investment bag but think that Hermes is way out of your reach. you'd be surprised!

so here's my mini review: this is pretty much The Perfect Bag. the 35cm size is just the right size for everyday - not too big but a lot more functional than many of the smaller 'lady bags'. i didn't want a kelly that was too small, as i think a bag in this style can veer towards slightly prissy if the proportion is off. because the leather is naturally grained, it is low-maintenance, scratch-resistant, and holds its shape well. however, due to the retourne (rounded seams vs the sellier/'turned out') stitching, it doesn't look too stiff or formal either. the perfect balance of elegant-casual. i was also really lucky as the original owner had everything - dustbags, two Hermes straps (canvas and leather), and the original lock and key. oftentimes vintage Hermes kellys will be missing the strap (they weren't included with the bag until recently, and are very pricey to get brand-new), so to have all the original accessories is just amazing.

here's a confession: ever since i was a kid, i've really, really loved stationery.

i always got really excited about back-to-school shopping - not really because of the school part, but because it meant getting new stationery supplies for the year. for me, this is the perfect marriage of my left-brain and right-brain tendencies. my nerdy pleasure of browsing through an office-supply store was balanced out with the idea that some sort of perfect everyday world involved notebooks, pens, and planners that fused organizational function with elegant design. after all, if you have to make your monthly budget or plan out the next week's appointments, isn't it always more romantic to write it on a nice leather-bound planner?

fast forward to our present age, the age of smartphones and iCalendars and digital everything. i'm certainly no luddite when it comes to sleek gadgets, but in the early 2000s i tried the PDA and hated it. back to the old-school planner. writing things down is really a pleasure that is worth preserving. i still like to write thank-you notes and holiday cards to friends. and for everyday, nothing beats the small but wonderful feeling of accomplishment that comes with crossing out a bunch of to-dos on my list.

my current and everyday 'analog' must-have is the Moleskine 18-month hardcover planner. it's minimalist, sleek, and designed with everything i need without any unnecessary frills. the other must-have would be my blackberry, which has taken the place of my address book for managing contact info and directions (thank goodness for google maps!). the keypad, as antiquated as it is in our touchscreen age, is also great for messaging and email.

what do you use to keep yourself organized? my crackberry is on its final legs after almost 4 years (and being dropped countless times...), so i'm looking to get a new phone soon that can also be used internationally. if anyone has any recommendations (i'm still a bit dubious about the iphone), do let me know!

lust and found: classic black dress flats

theyskens' theory classic black flats

this was not on my shopping list this season, but it has been on my 'need list' for several years. i had pretty much given up on looking for well-made and comfortable black leather flats. intermittently, i'd check out the Christian Louboutin version (the cheekily named 'pigalle' flat), but the price put me off. i was very happy when i found these black leather pointy-toe flats by theyskens' theory on sale the other day. perhaps finding just the right wardrobe foundation item is a bit like dating after all - you end up with exactly what you're looking for when you're not looking!

anyway, in case anyone is curious about theyskens' theory shoes, here's my mini review:

they run a little short - so half sizes should size up by half (i'm usually 6.5, so the 37s fit me nicely). the shoes are beautifully made out of calfskin, and unlike a lot of other similar shoes in this style, don't feel flimsy. the lower vamp also shows a little toe cleavage - which i'm fine with. i really love that there's no embellishment or unnecessary crap on these shoes - too many other styles i've looked at have grommets, ribbons, studs, etc. that totally miss the point of what a classic black dress flat should look like. the soles are slim in keeping with the elegant silhouette, but since these are dressier-occasion shoes (and therefore not going to be worn nearly as much as, say, my boots), i think i'll just take them to my cobbler to get a thin vibram half sole put on for a bit more traction.

i am a bit of a wimp when it comes to heels higher than 3 inches, so i'll be wearing these a ton for work events and evening when i want a more elegant shoe, but still want to remain comfortable and mobile.

charlote gainsbourg wears this tiny gold necklace in a lot of photos, and i love the elegance and simplicity - it's the perfect necklace for summer. light, barely-there on a delicate chain, and adds just enough glimmer to an airy summer uniform. there's also a lovely interview where Charlotte talks about some of her favorite things, including the necklace.

jewelry is special because of its so-called 'sentimental value': the symbolic meaning given to it by you or others. the best kind of jewelry has the weight of histories and memories etched in its patina. there's a mysterious, romantic air floating about in an estate jewelry shop...all the stories contained within the lockets and rings.

i always wear earrings before leaving the house, and like to wear chunky costume jewelry (i have this one j.crew necklace that i call my 'party necklace') and funky estate rings for evening. however, the minimalist in me also loves very simple, understated pieces. i like to keep things consistent for day - i love the idea of wearing a special piece of jewelry all the time - so much so that it becomes a part of you in a way.

one of my favorite films of all time is Hitchcock's To Catch a Thief. Cary Grant and Grace Kelly both inhabit their characters so perfectly, and the wardrobe used in the film for both actors is extraordinary. the posts at the brilliant blog Clothes on Film are insightful and inspiring, and like stephanie's wonderful post on Being John Malkovich and my earlier post this year on eccentric fur coats, they really connect the dots in the making of iconic 'looks' that circulate in fashion and cultural imaginations today. Chris Laverty, the editor/writer behind Clothes on Film, explains the significance of clothing and costume to film here:

"Costume design remains one of the most misunderstood and  underappreciated filmmaking arts. Far in excess of merely ‘dressing’ an  actor for their role, costume design is discourse. you often hear stylists and designers talk about how they're inspired by a certain film, and how certain scenes or a character is the muse for the 'story' for a collection or an idea. another one of my inspirations is Jean Seberg in the film adaptation of Bonjour Tristesse. the pixie haircut, her fresh-faced gamine charm, the rolled-up loose buttondown shirts...so lovely and i never get tired of this look!

yay! the sun has finally come out after almost two weeks of rainy, icky weather. it's a holiday weekend, which means bar-b-ques and seaside trips to herald the official start of summer. i always think that the real barometer that summer has arrived in the city is the pedicure. now that it's in the 80s, girls and women of all ages are breaking out their open-toe sandals and lining up to get pedicures at the nail salons. just walking down the street today, i saw three women (one with her spa 'flip-flops' still on) rocking some seriously bright and colorful toe polish (fluorescent orange, anyone?). i'll probably be living in my new Hope striped shirt all weekend and trying to keep bbq sauce off of it.

when the weather warms up, i start defaulting to a few key accessories that serve multiple functions throughout the week/weekend. a relaxed, slouchy bag that can hold everything but isn't heavy. comfy flat sandals that can go from day to night. a hat, because there's nothing cooler than a girl wearing a hat strolling down a sunny city sidewalk. and a little scarf that will take the place of a light jacket or cardigan when you're dashing in and out of air-conditioned temperate zones.

a note on the balenciaga city: it's a 2007 chevre, which to me in Balenciaga-world equals vintage, as they don't make 'em in chevre anymore! since the new year, i've been doing a gradual edit and sold a few of my bags and found this one second-hand. i was quite skeptical of the Balenciaga city bag several years ago, but now that i have one i've found that it's surprisingly functional (very spacious!) and easy to carry. the chevre leather is much more durable than the current lambskin ones in stores (yes, there IS a big difference). i just sling it over my shoulder and go. no fuss, easy to get in and out of, just great.

in light of the blogger meltdown, last week was a nice week to take a break from blogging. i have some news to update here - and it does seem like a lot has changed since i last posted!

so those of you who read my blog regularly may remember that about two months ago, i splurged on a vintage Chanel classic flap, my holy grail bag after several years of wishlisting and saving for it...

after i got it, i wore it pretty regularly for a few weeks, and did a few style posts about it here as well. however, i noticed that i just could not bring myself to get past the stage of 'babying' it. even though the lambskin leather on the vintage jumbos is a lot more durable than the current ones, i was always slightly too-careful when i was wearing it out. also, as it turns out, the large CCs made me rather self-conscious. so, last week, after much mulling, i sold it.

since i am not a fan of the current classic flaps, i am now newly obsessed with the 2.55 reissue in distressed calfskin. the way Daria is wearing it in these photos epitomizes the kind of stylish ease of the Chanel flap bag that was just missing in my vintage classic flap.

the ever-chic lin and S are also fans. sigh...this is such a bad time to be in the market to buy one, as the much-ballyhooed price increases have just made both the classics and the 2.55 reissues go up another egregious 20% (!!). oh well. patience and more research and ebay stalking for now...

there is quite a bit of trial and error and some fickleness with shopping, of course, but for me to shell out so much for a Chanel bag, i have to be 150% satisfied with such an investment purchase.

i'm going to a friend's spring wedding in the park this afternoon, so i'm finally wearing my floral dress that i got 2 years ago. i was immediately drawn to its painterly take on florals, and i love that it's lined in silk (why can't everything be lined in silk? sigh...). since it's taking place in a grassy park, i opted to wear flats as i don't have any wedges. there's a forecast for possible rain, but it's gorgeous and sunny out now so i'm going to hope that it stays this way!

clothes and personal history

this is my digital bulletin board of what will be in my rotation this spring and summer. some of these items are pieces i have or recently purchased as part of my shopping shortlist. others are elements that reflect my inspirations for the season.

making this fun collage reminded me of the long personal history of one of these items - the slouchy olive cargo pant.

a certain mainstream style makeover show on cable advocates throwing away clothes that you don't wear but hold on to for sentimental reasons. i usually agree with this approach in order to eliminate clutter in my closet, but i did regret very much one thing that i threw away.

every year i have always, without fail, been on the hunt for the perfect pair of olive green pants. my first and favorite pair for many years (through college and beyond) was a random hand-me-down oversized Gap cargo pant from my dorm RA (pretty sure she said something like, "these are unflattering on me, do you want them?"). and yes, the funny thing is, they were utterly too big and violated all the 'conventional' rules of flattering fit. in fact, they were the rugged chino version of the drop-crotch boyfriend pant before those two attributes became effortlessly chic. nonetheless, i always felt really good and confident and comfortable whenever i wore them, a little sexy, even. not to mention, they were so low-maintenance (and they were free!), i took them everywhere and wore them all the time as soon as the weather warmed up.

these were the original 'traveling pants' for me: i wore them all through college, studied abroad in them, backpacked through Central Asia in them, and pretty much lived in them the entire first summer when i met my boyfriend. then, when i was moving apartments a few years ago, i inexplicably threw them away... and have been kicking myself ever since. easy to replace, right? you'd think that in the world of women's fashion, it would be easy to find such things. but even with the glut of options every season, there are always some elusive items that end up on the perennial wishlist. i must have purchased at least 3 versions of these in the past 4 years, none of which were right. finally, this year i've finally (finally!) found the perfect slouchy pair, by relwen. i know it's just a pair of humble pants, and these won't be the same as the beloved pair that i threw away, but it feels good to finally find a worthy replacement. and i'm looking forward to more adventures with my new 'traveling pants'.

right now, i'm really inspired by turquoise and poppy red. i didn't think of it until recently, but perhaps it has something to do with the radiant blue hue that reminds me of the blue of a clear summer day, and poppy red always makes me think of the perfect berry popsicle.

as jennifer also posted recently, i think the combination of turquoise and gold is such an elegant twist to what is otherwise quite often a 'southwest' stone. i especially love the Persian turquoise that's found in antique and estate jewelry. i've also been really inspired by the expert styling of beaded pouch necklaces against the 'canvas' of silk tunics on - who else? - the stylish totokaelo ladies.

the last time i did an 'in the bag' post was in the middle of winter, so in the spirit of spring (which has officially arrived!), here is an update.

in spite of the current vogue for tiny lady bags, i tend to carry medium/semi-large bags for day as i just can't pare things down to the bare minimum unless i'm going out at night. (check out jennifer's and gardroben's cool minimalist posts though!)

the yuli scarf arrived today - it's amaaaazing! the woven silk is midweight, and has a slightly nubby texture that feels like a cross between a fine terry and linen. of course, fabric purist that i am, i love that it's a substantial silk! a definite s/s 2011 IM winner on all fronts. it's also pretty huge - when folded over in half triangle-wise, it drapes to form the perfect slouchy colorful scarf.

last week i also stumbled across these relwen pants on sale at steven alan outpost. it was one of those moments when you're window-shopping and suddenly you see the *exact* thing that you'd been looking for just hanging out on the rack.

they're a size S and fit generously to the point of being utterly shapeless and too big. but that's the 'fit' i was going for, if that makes any sense. sometimes, fit is all about how you *feel* wearing something. i've always been too cheap to spring for a pair of yohji pants, but i imagine i'd feel as good in them as i do in this relwen pair! the material is a nice, substantial chino cotton that feels almost like denim.

so, now i'm pretty much done with my list. i have one more spring/summer reveal, though, that i will post about later this week. yes, instead of the colorful sandals (let's be honest, i need another pair of shoes like i need MSG), i've decided to combine #3 with the wildcard for a red day bag. this will be a fun reveal! so stay tuned :) ...

if you're like me and maybe are a little bit obsessed with handbags, you may be familiar with the ubiquitous 'what's in your bag' tag that's been around on youtube, magazines, and the blogosphere. i never get tired of seeing what stylish people put in their bags - and now there's persona, a cool flickr set by photographer Jason Travis that features quirky and interesting people with their personal 'table of contents'.

it's particularly inspiring to see how much or how little some of the people featured pack in their day bags.

this week i've been carrying my mulberry bayswater, and i'd love to see the table of contents of Sofia Coppola, Ines de la Fressange, and John le Carré's* bags.

my favorite time of year is leather jacket weather. when it's just chilly enough that you can throw on your favorite leather jacket over a tee or shirt, a light scarf, jeans and short boots.

due to my earlier-season splurge, i'm not really shopping that much this season. doing a lot more wardrobe editing than shopping, which makes me feel good. however, there are a few choice items that i have shortlisted as key pieces for spring and summer - most of which i also plan on wearing year-round.

a question of aesthetics

my boyfriend's birthday is coming up, and this year i decided to get him a Comme des Garcons wallet. surprisingly, this is somewhat of a challenging purchase. i didn't want to get him something plain and boring like your typical brown leather billfold (though there are plenty of attractive options from Mulberry and others). it's challenging because, for those of you familiar with CdG wallets, their signature design is the zip-around style. so when i was looking online, i came across this cobalt blue version from CdG's new 'Luxury Group' collection.

this is where it gets tricky, though.

the good: CdG wallets are designed with a relatively unisex vibe and the quality is *superb* (i've been using my clover embossed red CdG for 3+ years now and it still looks brand new)

the tricky: are there gender connotations to a zip wallet vs a traditional billfold style? is there something inherently 'feminine' about a zipper detail on a men's wallet? i know the zip wallet for guys is a design that's been around since the 1970s. but i feel like most guys have a billfold style...

let me know what you think! (any guys reading this, please weigh in as well!)

i went to see the docu-biopic on NYT street style photographer Bill Cunningham two weeks ago, and as BC himself would say, it was maaahvelous! i won't rehash the film here, as there are plenty of reviews elsewhere and you should really go see it for yourself.

in contrast to other highly stylized street fashion photogs, Bill Cunningham's photographs for the NYT span decades and favor a cultural commentary-like 'lens' to documenting the New York scene. i particularly like his weekly On the Street videos where he gives his cheerful take on trends as he sees them.

one of the recurring themes in the film was the definition of 'style' and who has it in our celeb-crazy world. it is an unspoken rule that you should never ask BC to take your photograph or even acknowledge his presence should you be so lucky to be snapped by him. there's a slightly cringe-y scene in the film when a woman, unaware of this special code, clumsily approaches BC and not-so-subtly tries to get her picture taken. BC also makes some remarks about the boring, 'cookie-cutter' style of those who have so-called 'good taste' but no individuality...the three outrageously stylish women above are some of his favorite subjects. fair enough - there is an excess of celeb-fueled fashion these days.

still, i do admit that i will take inspiration now and then from (gasp!) the Olsen twins, Kate Bosworth and Sofia Coppola. i gravitate towards understated items (so-called 'classic'/quieter pieces). where's the line between boring good taste versus individual great taste? how do you express personal style in a meaningful way in your everyday life? who/what inspires you? are there fantasy style elements do you love but feel like you could never wear?
