essentials: a breton night out

this is very much the perfectly pared-down night out look.

this very A.P.C.-ish silk breton dress is on sale (70% off!) right now, and i couldn't be happier as i'd missed a similar one by A.P.C. last season and have been kicking myself ever since. the patent heels are both classy and comfortable, and also have the added bonus of not costing a fortune. pair with minimal diamond stud earrings for a bit of sparkle, finish off with a red lip, and you're out the door!
what do you think? do you have a minimalist night-out look?

  1. This totally rocks my boat. Striped dress and nude heels. I turned up at a party and boy, oh boy, totally out of my depth seeing all those fashionistas in the latest trend. This, I get. And I feel completely comfortable.

  2. It's not on sale in the UK yet! It's a great look for a summers evening. I think it takes guts for someone to stand out by wearing something like this but she looks really comfortable in this. I'm guilty of the black dress facade as I like to fade in to the background of black dresses. I have to say, I prefer this look - the pared down simplicity.

  3. I'm sorry, but that dress is really not flattering. She looks fat, plain and simple.

    3. My comment wasn't directed at Martha Plimpton, but rather the cut of the dress. I love the idea of a marinere dress, but the horizontal lines combined with the lack of any darts/shaping makes it (in my view) a very difficult look to pull off. I think clothes should not only been beautifully made in their own right, but also enhance the person wearing them.

  4. Gorgeous dress, I would just worry about the colour fading since it's JCrew and I am not too sure about their quality anymore. Otherwise this is pretty much a perfect outfit. My dressy night-out look in the winter usually involves a black Vince wool dress with stone embellishment and pleating with heels and a red lip.

    1. i got the dress and it looks quite nicely made. it's a woven silk twill and all the details make me think that it's a j.crew Collection piece. :)

  6. Love Martha Plimpton and such a bonus that she is super chic. I exclaim in delight every time she shows up on The Good Wife.

I bought a dress just this week for the festive season; didn't need it but I was resorting to shopping to cheer myself up, and at least I got a great a dress to show for it. It's a simple sleeveless navy shift, and like this dress, I like that it's pared down but still respectful to a special occasion.

  7. I'm actually in that process of wondering what I'll wear for x-mas. I always stick with simple even if I up my game for night-outs with a bit more bling and make-up.

  8. The Breton dress is stunning. It's one of those items that I've designed in my head, but have never found exactly the perfect one. I think you found a great one.

The image does make me realize just how much I loathe those event backgrounds. Completely understand why Vogue fights like hell to just pose attendees against a topiary.

    1. oh yeah, those logos! so tacky and takes away from the beauty of the person being photographed.
