on film: Isabel Marant // le jour d'avant

"You want to look good but you don't want to spend too much time on it. I will always go to things that make me feel comfortable. Being a woman I've got a very honest eye on woman, I don't have any fantasy."
–interview with Isabel Marant, via Telegraph

i don't own any Marant pieces other than my beloved dicker boots and cozy bator-esque coat, but longtime readers of LAM know that i am fiercely loyal to them. my dicker boots in particular have been easily the #1 most-worn, most-versatile, and most-comfortable pair of everyday shoes in my closet.

i've been sick this week with a frustrating and strange case of allergies, so it has been a good time to catch up on visual matters. i've been a fan of Loïc Prigent's filmmaking style ever since i saw Marc Jacobs and Louis Vuitton, so i happily clicked over to this piece on the making of Marant's s/s 2012 collection.

general thoughts: love the airy design studio, love how she handles all the pressure with a smile and steady sense of humor. i generally don't pay too much attention to fast fashion x designer collabs these days, but i am quite interested to see what IM creates for her upcoming H&M collection...

have you seen this film? what do you think? do you have any favorite Marant pieces?

  1. Oh my, thank you for this! I'm home alone with the poodle all weekend and have been wondering how to kill time. This is perfect! :)

  2. Oooh a good watch! I love Marant, and was reading a couple of pieces on her yesterday. I have a few pieces, the dicker boots which I just replaced (I had taupe but have traded those for a pair of anthracite), the poppy heels, a couple jackets, top and some skirts. I just love how easy her clothing is to wear, wish I could afford more of it though!

  3. I think the quality of her clothing has gone down as the hype around her has grown. I still love an IM reversible cotton/jacquard jacket I picked up some 3-4 years back but after seeing my Etoile trousers fall apart for no discernible reason in less than a year, I won't be buying her clothing again unless I chance upon her older (pre-expansion) pieces.

  4. It looks like a fun video. But sadly I do not speak French :-(
    I will watch it anyway.

  5. I enjoyed the video although I do not understand the language. Thanks for sharing!
So far, I have been quite selective on her pieces. I like her older collection of cotton blouses, her cotton skinny track pants and linen jackets. Sadly, ulyse didn't work for me as it was too heavy. I also have one of her lightly padded cotton jackets also from her older collection in sage that I love. I have to say that her jackets are really well-made, though it is probably a hit or miss.

  6. This film is in my queue for next week's flight. I think you have two gorgeous IM pieces that are of good quality, but you know my thoughts. Great styling and she understands what women want to wear, but the quality on many items has been hit or miss since the beginning. When she can, she cuts corners especially with fabric content, linings, seams on the jackets. I've continually noticed that since the early 2000s. It's sad because when the quality is flawless (like what The Row is doing), I'm willing to pay for it...

  7. I saw this video on French tv and her state of mind really made an impression on me, expressing the pressure of holding together a company and her own beliefs regarding consuming. She's getting a lot of criticism but the fact is that she's one of the rare independent, as in not financially backed up by a mega luxury group, (female) designer with a worldwide success. For that only, congrats to her.
Now I have to agree that her collections include lots of hit/miss and that the hype is not necessarily justified...
