wardrobe planning: fall 2013

"September is the January of fashion."
–Candy Pratts Price, The September Issue

i always get a bit giddy in late August, because real clothes season a.k.a. September is almost here. during my travels i collected a few September issues of Vogue as souvenirs, so i'm really starting to get excited now that there's a real back-to-school / new beginnings energy in the air.

denim:
[1] straight-leg raw jeans // in the mood for a different denim silhouette, and a second go at this project.
[2] black skinny jeans // i've worn out two pairs in the last five years. a true wardrobe staple.

shoes:
[3] Marant dicker boots // hands down the #1 most-worn item in my closet – time to get a second pair in black or cognac leather.

pullovers/knits:
[4] a witty sweatshirt and also one in a fun leopard print // almost as versatile as breton stripes.
[5] cream chunky-knit pullover // slouchy, to be worn with skinnies and over skirts and dresses.

tops/shirts:
[6] striped short-sleeve tees // it's not wardrobe planning without a stripe somewhere!

accessories:
[7] object + totem necklace // loving the mixed media organic vibe and that it's handmade!
[8] small leather duffel // the perfect size and goes-with-everything style. this is already crossed off the list as i got mine (a vintage find) shortly before i went on vacation. haven't stopped carrying it since.

on the fence:
a navy wool peacoat // in a slightly oversized, cozy Parisienne style with a stand-up collar. the dream! perfectly happy with my Marant coat from two years ago though, so technically i don't need another overcoat. we'll see...

thoughts on this season:
  • style icons keeping it real and uniformly chic: Emmanuelle Alt and the Olsen twins.
  • feeling contented with the foundations of my wardrobe overall. it's a good feeling!
  • main objective for fall: restock on major favorites and add a few 'new directions' to existing foundations.
  • super excited to reboot the raw denim project and update it regularly here. stay tuned soon...
  • really into Nike leather hi-tops, like the ones skater boys wore in the 90s. ever since i saw them on Jenna Lyons in the "Shiny Ponies" video i haven't been able to get them out of my mind. does this ever happen to you?
wardrobe editing:
i'll be listing items periodically at the shop, but in the meantime the latest gems are super rare vintage red Coach, limited edition Boyy and Steven Alan.

what are you feeling for fall? what's on your list?

  1. Love posts like this. I have allready added a black parka and a long cardigan. I need new ankleboots, and maby some snowboots, I have one warm pair i black leather, but the snow is slowly killing them. Besides that, I'm dreaming of ruffles, loos leatherpants and warm knits.

    1. i'd highly recommend the dickers if you're looking for ankle boots. they're still the most flattering ones of the bunch, and well made too :)

  2. Haha, 'real clothes season a.k.a. September', that's so true! I feel the same way. I am so lost during the summer, I just can't wait for fall even if it means back-to-school.

I am looking for new jeans -- I have yet to find a pair I love -- and flattering V-neck sweaters in various tones, just because I feel like they are missing from my wardrobe. I also want black ankle boots to complete my basic footwear collection!

  3. I love this post. It's so true "September is the January of Fashion." I always joke that the first day NY Fashion Week is back to school for me... It's the same giddy excitement and of course you gotta pick your outfit.

Autumn is my favorite season in NY. I'm getting excited. I am going abroad for a few weeks for work and then on holiday for a bit. The holiday has me relying on my summer wardrobe for a bit longer.

I'm really content with my wardrobe, but I'm always a sucker for luxe cashmere and a gorgeous coat. I vote yes to the navy peacoat with the slight oversized collar on your list. I would love a navy coat, but I haven't decided on seen anything that's perfect and I have so many coats. I finally found the perfect cocoon coat. It's very vintage Balenciaga- I can't wait to wear it.

    1. yes! love that back to school feeling. i hope you'll post something from your travels - i'm torn re the peacoat; it's been on my wishlist for a few years now but still haven't found the right one.

  4. I like all you picks for this season. No big changes for me personally. I would like to have a few things from Everlane but they are sold out ATM so I will wait a little. I am very excited for this mohair sweater I spotted on Uniqlo. I might pick up a new pair of dark denim and a few sweaters/OCBDs but that's about it for me!

  5. It sounds as though you have the Marant pea coat I keep an eye out for on eBay - wish I had even thought to snap that up. We're coming into Summer here so my wishlist is looking a little different, although mostly complete since I'm just filling in the odd gap.

    1. i don't - i have the other tweedy padded one from two years ago. definitely one of my best sale finds!

  6. Ahh boy I guess there's no point in ignoring the approaching season anymore but since its also my favorite being a layers hoarder, I fear my wallet cringes at the thought. Off to make a list!

  7. Hello, love your fall picks! Curious about something....noticed you sold your everlane silk shirt on the other blog but I seem to remember a favorable review. Any follow up thoughts? Was about to bite the bullet on the navy and black/white ones. Thanks!

    1. yes i sold the one that was a bit too big (mistagged in production i think). no complaints otherwise so long as you get the right size.

  8. I really like your picks - they sound like the choices of someone who is happy with their foundations and can start to have a little fun. That's where I'm at now and I love it! I want a camel coat (classic) in a similar shape to my navy car coat, but that buttons a little higher. I'm also looking for a chunky cream knit, and probably a new pair of brogues - I've been on the hunt for a while and I'm finally going to be in the market for a really great pair.

  9. It is true that September is the most appealine season for clothes! I love the warmer colours of the FW collections, the "back to school" feeling, the return of knits, tights and scarves...

I have been thinking of a selection of items to be on the look for as well, especially in the field of knits - sweaters and cardigans. Cheap ones look really cheap, and I have a hard time finding quality one that match my style and taste. If you have any brand recommendations to look into please let me know, as I'll need to buy at least 2/3 of them this year!

    1. ah knits. i'm not one to splurge on knits as i feel they're a bit too delicate for me to put too much hard-earned money on them...but i do like COS for a good balance between price and quality.

  10. I like your wishlist!
I've tried on the APC Petit Standard once in Paris and while they really feel as stiff as cardboard, I find their shape very flattering. I'm thinking about buying them online...it would be nice to wear something other than skinny jeans plus broken-in pairs do look amazing.
On my wishlist this fall I have a black leather tote bag and some mid-season tops in grey and black. I know, wild :)

    1. haha never underestimate the importance of neutral tops! and yes the APC jeans are stiff as cardboard in the store. will do a post on mine soon...

  11. i agree - the sales this summer have been especially good. curious if you end up getting the faux leather pants - do a post on them?

  12. Thanks for your recommendations! Love the photo of Emmanuelle Alt, and I'm wondering if you have any navy blazer suggestions...?

  13. I just adore your blog! I recently discovered it right before you went on vacation...so glad you are back! Posts like this are fabulous. I love your picks and your style! I've just started blogging myself, and am enjoying the process. I am drawn to minimalist, "clean", elegant style that works for a mom of two teen boys but has a bit of "flair"! A recent (and only!) brief trip to Paris has fueled my love of Emmanuelle Alt, Isabel Marant, and, of course, Ines de la Fressange style! Your photo of Emmanuelle Alt, as well as your impeccable taste and ideas have turned me into a loyal reader and follower. Many thanks! Kim

  14. I've got a hankering for a new coat over the oversized Marant-ish variety, but I'm really all good for fall. I might invest in a new oversized wool sweater or two, as those are always on high rotation in the colder months, but I can't think of anything else. Maybe a new beanie with a fluffy pom-pom on top :)

    1. i went to the Marant boutique recently and the coats are astronomically priced. :P

  15. Fall season is my favorite too. But only wish we had a "true" fall here so I can wear all my scarves, chunky sweaters and coats/jackets. It's quite sad that some coats/jackets don't even get worn in a year so I tend not to shop for fall pieces. I instead look at everyone else's fall outfits and wish I could join in. Although I think I'm going to add a dark navy blue somewhat light (not chunky) sweater to the mix because I can wear it from October to April.

  16. I like summer for lounging and swimming and eating ice cream, but for getting dressed it's all about the fall! Your list made me drool a little bit (in what felt like a mature and responsible way). I have an abundance of little booties, but I have to say I'm craving a new pair. I'm thinking dicker or mars. And I do need another pair of black skinnies too, since mine are on their deathbed. Also needed: oversized slouchy sweater(s). I did just pick up a great coat at Zara, and if you go in for the occasional high street purchase to satisfy a craving, you might consider checking their coats, especially if you don't necessarily "need" a new one...

  17. what a timely post, i've been writing out my list as well! i'm eyeing a grey Acne wool scarf, ankle boots (as if i need another pair -- deciding between APC or No 6 clog boots), and perhaps an Everlane silk shirt. i'm also need of some classic black trousers.

i bought a cocoon-like zara cardigan online a few days ago, we'll see how that goes. i also bout an APC gabardine coat on sale earlier this summer and i'm looking forward to wearing that when the rain returns to seattle.

    1. i'm really hoping we have a nice fall season this year so i can wear my trench a bit before it gets too cold! i vote for the APCs - i had the no.6 clog soles and they're not as easily hard-wearing in rainy/colder climes. plus you can easily re-sole the APCs at a good cobbler.

    2. oh, thanks for the insight! you have APC's in nubuck, yes? how do they stand up in the winter?

    3. they've held up well. granted when it's really slushy and snowy out i wear my other tall boots, but these are quite sturdy for year-round wear.

  18. Yes! I'm tired of my summer clothes, too, although it's probably due to my own fault. I live mostly in t-shirts and shorts all summer (hey, it's hot, and silk and wool just don't handle sweat all that well). Thanks for the Birkenstock Gizeh recommendation, by the way - I found a pair in the correct size and they have quickly become a staple.

It seems like a lot of people are really feeling the chunky, cream-colored, oversize fisherman's sweater this fall, as are you. I have a traumatic middle school memory from 1993, in which I bought a beautiful keyhole neckline chunky white sweater, wore in once, and someone managed to spill an entire cup of coffee all over it - who even has coffee in 8th grade? Yikes. Must have been the teacher's mug or something. Anyway, my mother was livid, and I have owned very few white things ever since....

    1. ha! oh my goodness - i think i drank coffee in 8th grade. but i'm nervous about white clothes (other than t-shirts) too. i make the exception for a cream sweater... :)

  19. I totally agree about fall being the "real" clothes season. As much as I enjoy summer, I feel that my other clothes have been neglected due to the dress-to-bare-minimum inducing temperature, so I am happy that fall is here and I can wear some of my fav. clothes again!
My wishes for this season are ankle boots (from Acne in particular), and a nice grey knit cardi.

Looking forward to your next post.

  20. It's my first fall in three years, so it feels a little strange and exciting to plan purchases. I need a new pair of boots- Mars probably because I have to walk around DC so much, an Object & Totem necklace, and a good pair of black slouchy trousers. I have an abundance of dresses, from living in perpetual summer, which I will just wear with thick tights until it gets too cold. I would love a more masculine-cut coat, but that's not as high a priority as the other items I purchased.

  21. Summer is officially over now and I really need to think ahead to winter. I love that blazer Emmanuelle Alt is wearing. I've been trying to find one similar for a while.

  22. I have started the fall planning...it starts in the summer when autumnal things are on sale. But I too am at a point where my foundational wardrobe is pretty good and I just need to keep stocking the go-tos plus a few fresh pieces that make me smile. I think these will be:

Another pair of Rag & Bone Newbury boots: these are my Dickers. Something about the Marant footbed doesn't work for me although since you love yours so much and our wardrobes seem to have about an 80% overlap, I may give them another try! I already snagged el cheapo two-tone Zara ankle boots that are pretty rad for a slick look with black jeans or leggings.
Inhabit cashmere v-necks - have you tried these? The perfect everything sweater and regular 80% off sales....
More Drakes scarves, best scarves ever
Another army-ish jacket: I have a great Rag & Bone one but want something more oversized and easy to beat up. This will probably be a Zara type find.
A leather skirt. I am after the perfect one.
Every F/W season I look for "one great coat". Sometimes I find it, sometimes not. I will say re your peacoat that Rag & Bone is rarely a mistake!! This year for me it may be a color.
THIS FALL I WILL WEAR my Westwood kilt that is just so awesome and never leaves the closet!
In jewelry, I would like to add a cuff which brings me (bien sûr) to Hermès...ideally it would be the red CDC I just stupidly turned down....so as a finale...
....yes, I really think I "need" another Kelly. A workhorse one, in barenia or vache naturel or something. Ahem.

    Sigh...fall is so much fun!
