wardrobe planning: holiday 2012 / winter 2013

i've had a girl crush on Kirsten Dunst ever since i saw her in The Virgin Suicides. like her friend and auteur Sofia Coppola, her simple approach to dressing offers such a refreshing contrast from the rest of the über-trendy Hollywood set.

this holiday / winter season, my wishlist is inspired by Kirsten's simple, elegant, and practical style:

at the top of the list is a navy peacoat (contemplating this one on sale as well), which has been a longtime wishlist item. the splurge of the season is a PS1 bag, which you guys are probably sick of hearing me blabber on about at this point. a month or so ago, i sold off a number of items from my closet, and finally decided to get the suede version as an early Christmas present. (more on the bag soon!) next on the list is a pair of A.P.C. ankle boots to alternate with my Marant dickers – am currently leaning towards the cognac nubuck version. a few pairs of tights are in order – in a sheer mini-heart print and matte black. i also need a pair of fingerless gloves (iphone-friendly!) – love these in cashmere, which are over half off (great gift idea too!).

finally, one item that's been missing from my closet is a fun party dress. i hate spending a lot on dressy dresses because they're special occasion pieces, so i'm eyeing this silk and sequin gold one that's currently on sale. i love that it's really simple to balance out the sparkle, and it's also layering-friendly with a leather or tux jacket. i also like this T by Alexander Wang silk maxi dress that's majorly marked down. both dresses remind me of something that a young Sofia or Kate Moss would wear out on the town.

what's on your holiday / winter wardrobe wishlist? have you scooped up some great sale finds so far?

  1. I'm surprised that you got the PS1 as I feel like I recall you deciding against it? Either way, I'm sure it was a welcome addition. My friend has one in a nude leather, it is lovely.

Be careful with the heart tights, I've owned a few pairs and they have laddered on the first or second wear each time :(

Otherwise it sounds like you have it pretty sorted out! For me, since we are coming up to summer, I'm keeping an eye out for some new sandals (I quite like the saltwater ones), a white singlet, a white/cream lightweight jumper and a striped tee.

    1. yeah, i usually make up my mind about things rather quickly but this was the exception! i ended up comparing the leather vs the suede PS1 in the store and really fell for the suede. interestingly the suede version feels more hardy and structured than the leather versions.

  2. Kirsten always manages to bring a little extra something to everything she wears. Michelle Williams and Kate Bosworth each have a similar style to hers but it somehow doesn't seem as organic and natural to them as it does to Kirsten. She's got a certain edgy quality to her that makes her so interesting to look at.

I just bought those APC boots at 25% off at the Shopbop Black Friday sale. I can't wait to get them!

    1. so true - i also think she's such an underrated actress. Melancholia was too depressing for me to watch, but i hear she was fantastic in it.

let me know how you like your APCs! i've been wishlisitng them for forever!

  3. I love Kirsten Dunst's style too along with Michelle William's. I especially like how they repeat the same piece of clothing or accessories multiple times showing us how investing in a good quality item is important :)
This is a very well thought-out list.
I have the cognac APC nubuck ankle boots (I rotate it with the IM Dicker boots too) and they're worth every penny (super comfy and go with everything).

    1. oooh great to hear that your APCs are so good! how is sizing? i'm guessing the typical half-size up if you're in between?

    2. I'm usually a 6.5 and I went with the 7. The size 6 was too snug in the toe box and the 7 fit perfect with a little bit of room for insoles or socks :)

  4. I love Kirsten Dunst's style - she wears simple things well. I might need to add cashmere fingerless gloves to my list!

  5. Love kiki's style, she always looks comfortable and I feel like she truly loves what she puts on - don't know how I go, but I'd like to believe I'm right.

I adore peacoats and would buy one the minute I decide to move somewhere cold. Same goes for those APC boots - I don't see them looking quite right in the tropics, but so lovely!

    1. i know! also i love that she seems to stay away from fake tanning and over-bronzing and embraces her porcelain complexion. no small feat in tan-crazy hollywood...

  6. I like Kirsten Dunst's style too - she seems very influenced by Sofia Coppola, and her dressing reflects the same sense of ease.
Love that peacoat, and you can't go wrong with Vince. Their quality is impeccable.
The only thing on my winter wishlist is a burgundy leather bag...which I just bought, courtesy of DVF.com :) Looking forward to receiving it. I love wearing her dresses, so I hope her bags live up to my expectations!

    1. ooh would love to see a pic of your dvf bag - what size/style is it? :)

    2. It's the Drew duffel in burgundy goatskin with gold hardware. I have realised that I really love that 'Speedy' shape - own two other bags in a similar shape, the Alexander Wang Daria in black leather with gunmetal hardware and a Belen Echandia bag in glossy red leather with silver hardware. Thought it was time to add one in gold hardware, and this one looks rather lovely at a very sensible price.

  7. Hi Miss Sophie!

I've been following your blog for a while but I'm kind of a lazy commenter...:)
I like your Kristen Dunst inspired wishlist a lot, I bought the APC boots on sale in Paris last January and I love them. I got them in cognac suede and they go with almost everything. As the sales assistant pointed out, the heels are just high enough to give your outfit "allure" -as they say- while still being comfy.
I wanted to buy the IM Dickers in black suede to give my APC a rest but when I tried them on the 39 was too small and the 40 way too big ?!? I don't know if it's me, but IM should really do half sizes...If I'll travel to the US next spring I might give Rachel Comey boots a try, they look really nice!

    1. hi Chiara!

the APC boots do get rave reviews across the board. and yeah the dickers sizing can be a wee bit off for some - you could always put in an insole though for the larger size. that would give a little more cushioning/arch support as well.

  8. Kirsten Dunst's style suits her. It's easy and laid back but never sloppy. Very Sofia Coppola. I love coats and own too many, but a navy peacoat is such a classic. It works with everything. I'm always on the lookout for gorgeous coats.
