year in review: 2014 favorites

via tumblr

i had intended to put this together before Christmas, but holiday and travel plans got in the way. 2014 in the sartorial department was a good year marked by solid finds and minimal wardrobe waste.

the wardrobe MVPs:

1. Everlane basics - second year in a row. overall really good, affordable staples in cotton, silk, and cashmere.
2. Splendid leggings and hoodie cardigan - my travel + weekend essentials.
3. Chan Luu cashmere silk scarf - all the qualities in a perfect scarf: huge, light yet cozy, chic, and drapes like a dream. and CL greys are the best!
4. Givenchy antigona bag - i think Givenchy is making some of the best quality luxury bags on the market right now. i've brought mine on planes, trains, and automobiles all through 2014 with nary a scratch to show for all the mileage.
5. AG skinny jeans - comfy and flattering. alternating between these and the A.P.C.s (yep, raw denim project still on) most days.

thoughts for 2015:
  • thank you, as always, to everyone who takes the time to read and/or comment!
  • don't compromise on quality, regardless of price.
  • when in doubt, go with instinct.
  • when shopping / wardrobe planning, ask the question: "would i pack this for a weeklong trip?" and edit as necessary.
what are your best buys from last year?

  1. "would i pack this for a weeklong trip?" What a good thing to keep in mind. I'm always reaching for the same few pieces when packing for a short trip.

  2. My favorites in 2014 were shoes mostly: Dries van Noten sandals, Adidas Stan Smith.

  3. I am definitely going to start asking myself "Would I pack this for a weeklong trip?". What a good benchmark for foundation workhorses! The standouts in my wardrobe this year are my black Rag & Bone skinny jeans, black Everlane cashmere pullover, J. Crew chelsea boots, and Isabel Marant Dickers (even though I got them in December and haven't worn them too much yet, I'm counting them anyway b/c I love them). Aside from them all being black, the other theme is that many of them were inspired by this very blog, so thank you Miss Sophie for keeping up the great work! :)

  4. My navy Acne Canada scarf has been used daily this winter. It is so warm, versatile, and I get so many questions and compliments on it. I bought it way back in July when I noticed all the Canada scarves were veeeery briefly on sale for $75 on the Acne site before they raised the price from $150 to $170. I kick myself for not buying another color as well.

A bit random, but I purchased a few Made-in-France hair barrettes earlier this year (brand: France Luxe) and they're excellent quality and can handle my very thick hair without breaking.

  6. I also agree with Everlane clothing! Their styles and seasonal colors are just great to have in my closet. I just went crazy on their recent sweatshirt and heavyweight tees. Unfortunately my feet did not work with their narrow yet beautiful loafers (a popular 2014 release it seems), but I ended up getting extremely wonderful customer service on this issue and that always wins me over.

My personal 2014 favs: my black rag & bone newbury boots for always keeping me chic at work - I can't bear 3 inch heels outdoors so these live under my desk; mansur gavriel mini saffiano bucket - a bit of a sleeper hit! I thought it'd be too small at first but I use it all the time - it's amazing how much wear, tear and rain I put this bag through and the textured saffiano just saves me every time...and just for fun, a late 2014/early 2015 fav: smartwool socks. oh my god why did I ever wear anything but wool socks in all of my previous nyc winters? so practical. a bit pricey but when hunted down enough, you'll get lucky with promo codes!

  7. i bought a few pieces in 2014, and most of them have become favs: an apc-trench, a navy-blue cord-dress (mhl), a black a-line heavy wool skirt (acne), a navy-blue knee-long, oversized popeline dress (acne), an electric blue boiled sweatshirt with side zippers (acne) and a babyblue, collarless cotton blouse (acne). all these items were on sale and purchase was made under the 'one-in-one-out'. an electric-blue, long-sleeved wool jersey tee from cos is also among my fav and a pair of gray ankle-classic rubber boots with laces (ilse jacobsen).
"would i pack this for a weeklong trip?" - that is a really good question and will make decisions quicker. :)

  8. Everlane silk tanks, v-neck t-shirts
Muji skinny super stretch ankle jeans fit me perfectly and make me regret all other pair of skinny jeans in my closet
Patagonia nano-puff and down jackets in tailored grey and white
    Rachel Comey Mars in Grey

  9. I assume that's the Everlane box tee? I've been wanting to get one ever since I downgraded my old yellowing boxy tees to sleepwear, but always hesitated over sizing and fabric. I'm also cherishing a distant hope that they will do their sleeveless chunky knit in cotton for summer! It's my 90s dream come true but I've yet to find one in a fabric that would work for the tropics.

I got really good basics last year - some replacement t-shirts and knee-length chinos from Uniqlo, an awesome navy COS cardigan, a great viscose midi dress from Uniqlo. I also really love an MHL plaid kneelength shirt dress I got in their sample sale in London - will buy it if they make it in a different fabric in a heartbeat - the cut is perfect.

Those were things that made me marvel how I got by without them all this time.

    1. lin - yes it's the box tee! mine is from an earlier release before they added the new sizes so it's an M. i may order some new ones soon so i'll let you know :)

  10. High-waisted jeans. They've got to be at least a 10-inch rise. They've solved my long torso/short legs issue and they make my butt look good. :) I've worn to death my Imogene+Willie Elizabeths and Acne Needles. I confess that I first became obsessed with high-waisteds after seeing them on St. Vincent in her video for "Cruel." Rock stars are still the biggest influence on my style, even past 30.

Golden Goose leather mid-tops. I still can't believe I spent so much on sneakers but I knew I'd love these. They fit so well into my mostly-casual lifestyle. The quality leather gives them a touch of luxe so I don't feel like I'm slumming it too much. The mid-top doesn't cut off the line of my legs at an awkward spot like high-tops. I have to force myself NOT to wear them everyday.

  11. Ask again when it's not winter, but right now my answer has to be two coats: a new fitted ski jacket and a knee-length wool coat that actually fits in the shoulders because Helmut Lang makes coats in size P. Both were on sale but still way more than I have ever spent on outerwear. But the feeling of being warm yet not frumpy is so so worth it, and with coats, the eventual cost per wear makes it easy to rationalize the purchase!

  12. Any Givenchy is an MVP! You're is great. I got mine (a small Pandora) as a gift in 2014 and it's been indispensable for city life (esp. with kids!). And you're right, the leather is thick and seemingly indestructible. I actually am getting better at making more thoughtful purchases, so I think I scored quite a few MVPs this year mostly on sale - a few Acne sweaters in beige and grey tones, some super comfy Pierre Hardy crepe oxfords, and the same Dries sandals as Aissa ;)

  13. Sophie, who makes your adorable silver loafers in the pic above? Love your choices. My best was an Eileen Fisher black wool duster coat that goes with everything, my J Crew "Downing" tote for $75 (!), an oversized Autumn Cashmere charcoal grey cashmere sweater for $40, and Panjar winter boots for $52. I love a good buy, especially when it's a need and has style!
