wardrobe planning: spring 2022

spring colorblocking

it really feels like spring took ages to arrive this year. now that we are all (at least in our part of the globe) re-emerging into some kind of brave new world, the current mood seems to be we're all trying to figure out how to get dressed again.

wardrobe planning: spring 2018 [update]

i'm convinced that spring this year will be condensed into about a week and a half before it will be time to break out the Birks, sigh. on the other hand, i'm feeling more inspired this season than last year. and something about a baby Kate looking wistful in a Parisian cafe just makes me smile.

there's snow blanketing everything as i write this, but i am firmly in the mood for spring.

wardrobe building 101: the 10 best fall basics under $150

earlier this year, i wrote about the quandary of finding quality clothing at reasonable prices. several readers have written to ask for affordable fall essentials, so here are my picks for the season.

f/w foundations: Carine x Uniqlo

if you've been looking for a sharply tailored foundation coat or the Chanel-esque little black jacket, you could just snap these up from the Carine Roitfeld x Uniqlo collection and move on to more important matters. a little black boucle jacket has been on my wishlist for years now, so this one is a special addition to my f/w wardrobe planning tally...

overall it seems to be a tight edit and closely modeled on CR's signature uniform. dark and monochrome, much in keeping with the moody, ever-so-femme fatale vibe. i'm not in need of any form-fitting skirts at the moment, but if you worked in a relatively corporate space and wanted to amp up the typical '9-to-5' look, these are excellent, versatile options with a bit of an edge. or you could just as easily pair the individual foundation outerwear pieces with existing staples and instantly add some swagger to your f/w rotation.

have you scoped anything from the collection? any pieces on your list?

Emerson Fry x les anti-modernes* // fall essentials

is there anything better than a great coat and luxe accessories to usher in fall? this month, i've teamed up with the lovely folks at Emerson Fry on my fall essentials edit.

i'm particularly inspired by a textured take on seasonless classics, and these are my favorites from the EF Fall 2014 collection: the gentlewoman's tailored coateasy luxe slides, and a convertible portfolio.

recently, a reader emailed me to ask for recommendations for a good olive utility jacket.

essentials: early fall uniform

hello, September //

feeling ready for fall with my trusty everlane swing trench (in XS), favorite r&b black skinnies, and varas. the sleeves on the jacket are a little long on me, but i'll be cuffing them up while it's not too chilly. i like the midweight, slightly sculptural quality of the treated cotton, and the silhouette makes me feel just a little like Anna Karina...

what are your early fall favorites right now?

essentials: the best summer / travel bags

the effortlessly lovely Liu Wen

every summer, a kind of seasonal minimalism takes over. hot weather has a funny way of inspiring simplification, and i find myself liking everything lighter and unfettered this time of year.
